There’s something about the start of a new year that always makes us reflect on the year that has been. 2021 was an interesting year – the world began opening up despite the pandemic and this brought with it, its own set of challenges.

From universities and labs opening up to remote work becoming status quo – different parts of the world defined a new normal. Keeping this in mind, R Discovery aimed to bring to you the best research at your fingertips from the comfort of your own home. We reflect back on the reading habits you built ( and didn’t 😉 ) in 2021.

  • Based on your research reading what kind of researcher you were in 2021.
Every research journey is different. Some researchers narrow down to one topic and spend months reading and thinking about it, only to write an entire paper out in a few weeks. Others like to read and write simultaneously over the months, exploring different topics and understanding how different science might help further their writing. Based on this we found that most researchers fell into one of three categories
    • Focused: Researchers who read only a few topics repeatedly.
    • Versatile: Researchers who mostly focused on a few topics, but also looked at related topics to help further their research.
    • Explorers: These researchers enjoyed reading on a wide variety of topics. Like the person who read up on Algerian Cinema, Mental Health, Osteoporosis and Shakespeare!
  • Research reading is a habit that helps researchers stay on top of the latest in their field. R Discovery aims to help in the building of that habit. Keeping that in mind, we wanted to share the total number of papers you read in the year. If you’d like to increase this number, you can always switch on notifications that provide the daily top 3 papers most relevant based on your reading patterns. Read more without searching for it.
  • Of all the topics you covered, we wanted to share the one that was most viewed on R Discovery by you. Remember: R Discovery is different for every researcher.

  • We also included your overall activity – how many times you liked or Bookmarked or shared an article. These actions help the recommendation improve, but more importantly they let us know that you are liking the app. And we are grateful for your constant feedback.
  • As a Thank You, we added a card with the new R Discovery Amplify feature. R Discovery Amplify is a feature that understands how to increase the scope of your research while staying relevant. It suggests topics that are relevant to you but may not be covered by the topics you are actively following them.

R Discovery is nothing without you, the researcher who logs in daily to find, peruse and read the latest research. And in 2021, we were able to reach half a million of you. Our hearts are filled with gratitude as we take these first steps in to 2022.

We wish you a happy new year! Hope 2022 is filled with good health, high spirits and lots of kickass relevant research! Cheers!
