Researchers who consistently deliver break-through findings are those who keep up with the latest developments in their own and related fields. However, an effective literature search can be both a time- and effort-intensive process. Researchers often have to scrawl various academic databases and identify relevant content, and even then many of full-text research articles are behind journal paywalls.
Tedious process of trying to access full-text research articles
For researchers, finding the most recent and relevant research papers to read is only one of the many tasks on their publishing journey. And unless the research article you need is open access, you will require permission to view full-text research articles, which depends on whether your institution has subscribed to the content. Getting this confirmation can take you on a disappointing journey of login screens and requests for passwords. As a result, researchers often find themselves wasting time and energy in simply trying to access content. In their frustration, they may choose an illicitly obtained and potentially out of date copy of the articles they need, which could impact their research. This is where R Discovery, with its GetFTR and new LibKey integration, comes in to close the gap between discovery and access, making life simpler and more productive for researchers.
Full-text access through institutional authentication
On the R Discovery app, if you want to access the full text of a research article, you can just tap on ‘View full text options’. R Discovery will then ask you to add your institution’s name so it can check whether the full text research article is available through an institutional subscription. Once confirmed, the next step for researchers is to authenticate access via your institution credentials and you’re done! You’re now a single tap away from accessing all the full-text research articles that are available to you via your institution. It’s as simple as that!

R Discovery future plans and impact on researchers
R Discovery’s latest integration with LibKey will further expand access to full-text research articles. With this, millions of researchers on R Discovery will gain seamless access to full-text research papers through institutional authentication to content from more than 50% of all scholarly content. We will continue to build this feature to increase the number of publishers, universities and institutions covered; ultimately aiming to provide access to all scholarly content.
Separately, R Discovery has also broadened its coverage of open-access articles across top subject areas, partnering with global publishers like Springer Nature. Together, these changes aim to take your literature search and reading experience several notches higher. Make sure you don’t miss out on the benefits of using this smart literature search and reading app!
