academic community

Starting on your PhD journey often means having to navigate a solo path. Given the self-directed nature of research and dissertation writing, working in solitude is not uncommon. Recognizing the potential isolation, it becomes vital to actively build connections and create a PhD community of peers who understand the unique challenges of earning a PhD and serve as a support system for overcoming obstacles. (1)

From the rigorous demands of research to the emotional toll of navigating the uncertainties of academia, the challenges could be many. A strong and supportive academic community can serve as a lifeline, providing encouragement, advice, and camaraderie. The PhD community becomes a space for individuals to share their successes and adversities, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding. (2)

How to Build a Supportive Academic Community?

Participation in Academic Gatherings: Actively participating in academic events such as conferences, seminars, and workshops is crucial for students on their PhD journey. Beyond broadening intellectual horizons, these gatherings provide opportunities to meet fellow researchers and exchange ideas. Connections formed during these events could grow into a supportive network that extends beyond the immediate setting. Active involvement in academic events is a strategic investment in building a robust PhD community that not only enhances academic enrichment but also offers valuable support. (3)

Exploring Online Platforms: Online platforms have a pivotal role to play in community-building. PhD students can join relevant forums, social media groups, and academic societies that cater to their field of study. It is important to note that other PhD candidates also experience a sense of isolation and, like you, seek an academic community. They might find it challenging to go out in search of others from their field of study. Online platforms offer one of the best and most convenient ways to identify groups and scholars for discussion, information-sharing, and mutual support. (4)

Collaborative Study Sessions and Research Groups: Collaborative study groups are practical learning tools. When students organize and participate in group studies and join research groups, they combine their knowledge and skills, creating a supportive environment for each member of the group. This collaborative effort goes beyond the traditional solitary study approach, cultivating a dynamic and enriched learning experience for everyone involved. (5)

Informal Gatherings: In addition to the structured settings of formal academic events, informal gatherings offer a laid-back atmosphere favourable to the development of meaningful relationships and a PhD community. Whether it’s sharing a coffee break, enjoying a casual lunch, or engaging in a collaborative study session, these occasions foster a sense of camaraderie and connection among individuals. The casual interactions contribute to the creation of a close-knit community where shared experiences and mutual support thrive beyond the confines of formal academic engagements.(6)(7)

Inclusivity, Diversity, and Respect(8)

While supporting yourself and individuals within the academic community remains a primary goal in forming connections and building communities, the larger objective should also be to foster an inclusive environment. This communal atmosphere welcomes diversity, values inclusivity, and upholds mutual respect. This ensures the academic community becomes an equitable space where all voices are heard and appreciated. Let’s explore how to build this healthy environment.

  1. Inclusivity: Promote inclusivity by proactively reaching out to all members of the PhD community. Ensure that everyone feels included and values diverse perspectives. Cultivate a culture where each voice is heard and respected, fostering an environment of equality and mutual regard.
  2. Diversity: Embrace diversity in its entirety, spanning academic backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. A community enriched with diversity brings forth a wealth of ideas and perspectives, contributing to a more vibrant and dynamic intellectual environment.
  3. Respect: Above all, respect stands as the cornerstone of any robust community. Cultivate a culture of respect by recognizing diverse approaches to research, acknowledging individual strengths, and offering constructive feedback. In an academic community built on respect, the likelihood of thriving and achieving collective success is significantly enhanced.

The solo journey of pursuing your PhD can be as isolating as you want it to be. You might believe that the more you work in isolation, the better your focus will be, and you will reach your true potential. However, the truth is that your PhD community will always be around you, silently contributing in the background, even as you work independently. The same holds for every member of the group. As an active participant in this community, you not only need to ‘take’ but also ‘give.’ Remember, the goal of your academic community is to progress individually but succeed collectively.
