Expository essays

Expository essays are used to explain to or inform readers about a particular topic by presenting a comprehensive, objective, and research-based analysis in a simple, easy-to-understand way. Unlike argumentative essays, expository essays are focused on providing accurate, factual information rather than persuading the reader.  

This type of essay avoids personal opinions and focuses solely on providing an explanation based on facts, statistics, or examples. It tests the ability of early career researchers to present a well-organized, clear explanation of a subject. Expository essays have a structured format that includes an impactful introduction, a clear thesis statement, body paragraphs that provide all the details, and an engaging conclusion that summarizes the main points. 

Argumentative or persuasive essays

Argumentative essays are written with the aim of persuading readers to accept a particular viewpoint or argument. This type of essay needs to be based on thorough research. Also, arguments must be based on credible facts and evidence-based reasoning that can support the research statement.  

Moreover, incorporating rhetorical strategies to strengthen arguments makes this type of essay more impactful. It is important not to focus on evidence that supports one side of the argument alone. In fact, when writing an argumentative essay, it is best to acknowledge different viewpoints so that the bigger picture can be discussed and presented. 

An argumentative essay is best presented in an organized format, which consists of an introduction that introduces the argument body paragraphs that provide:

  • Evidence supporting the argument.
  • Counter-arguments to address opposing views.
  • A conclusion that reinforces the main argument.

Descriptive essays

Descriptive essays mostly use figurative language and offer a more creative approach to writing. This type of essay helps students and early career researchers create a vivid picture of the subject being discussed through detailed descriptions that incorporate actions, thoughts, sensory details, and emotions instead of simply stating facts or explaining an idea.   

Unlike expository essays, descriptive essays usually do not follow a rigorous structure. They also typically begin by introducing the subject of the essay, followed by a description that creates a clear picture of what one is trying to convey. Therefore, it is essential to carefully pick and choose the words being used. Given that this type of essay is more subjective, including information or data from credible sources helps provide readers with more context and enables writers to create a more vivid description of the subject being discussed. 

Narrative essays

Narrative essays tell a story or recount an event from the author’s perspective. This type of essay relies on a well-structured plot, character development, and vivid descriptions to engage readers and convey a deeper meaning or lesson. If this sounds similar to writing a short story – it isn’t. Typically, narrative essays have a clear academic objective, which means that they usually focus on experiences that the author has personally lived through and managed. Some examples of these types of essays would be autobiographical essays, college applications that showcase career growth and personal work experiences or creative writing projects.  

Narrative essays usually follow a simple chronological order with an introduction that sets the context, body paragraphs that include dialogue and character development to draw readers into the narrative and help develop the story and a conclusion that reflects on its meaning or impact.
