class="ez-toc-section-end">

Article types fall into 3 broad tiers, and knowing where your manuscript sits clarifies what reviewers will expect from it.

Primary literature: first-hand reports of original data, including original research articles, short communications, case reports, Registered Reports.

Secondary literature: work that synthesizes or evaluates existing studies, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, narrative reviews, commentaries, and editorials.

Tertiary literature: compiled and distilled sources such as textbooks, encyclopedia entries, and reference handbooks, which journals rarely publish but which cite both tiers above.

Meta-analysis deserves a clarification here. It is a statistical method for pooling results, applied within a systematic review; it is not a parallel article type sitting alongside reviews. A paper is usually titled “a systematic review and meta-analysis” when both are present.

Original Research Articles

The original research article is the most widely published and most highly valued format across the sciences. It reports a complete study: the question, the design, the data, and the interpretation, written by the people who did the work.

What goes into an original research article?

It presents a complete original study using the IMRaD structure: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, supported by an abstract, tables, figures, and data or code availability statements.

Typical length is 3,000 to 8,000 words, excluding references.

Data may come from experiments, surveys, interviews, fieldwork, simulations, or secondary datasets.

Full external peer review applies, usually with 2 or more reviewers and at least 1 round of revision.

A structured abstract of 200 to 300 words is common in health and life sciences.

Figures and tables are usually capped, often at 6 to 8 combined.

IMRaD is not universal. Humanities articles, much qualitative social science, and theoretical papers in mathematics and philosophy use argument-led structures with thematic sections instead. Check the journal’s published articles rather than assuming.

When is an original research article the right choice?

Choose it when you have a complete study with new data, a defined research question, and findings that stand on their own. They suit findings that are solid and interesting but not yet extensive enough to fill a full paper.

Short communication, also called a rapid communication: a condensed original study, usually 1,000 to 2,500 words with a tight figure limit and accelerated review.

Brief report: similar in length, common in clinical journals for small samples, pilot data, or single-outcome analyses.

Technical note: a concise description of a refinement to an existing technique, instrument, or workflow.

Research note or letter (research): used in physics, astronomy, and economics for compact results of immediate interest.

These formats are fully peer-reviewed and fully citable. Their main limitation is space: supporting data often moves to supplementary files, and some journals restrict follow-up submissions on the same dataset.

Clinical and Case-Based Article Types

Clinical publishing has its own set of formats, each with distinct evidentiary weight and distinct ethical prerequisites.

What is the difference between a case report and a case series?

A case report describes 1 patient; a case series describes several patients, usually 3 or more, who share a condition, exposure, or treatment. Case series may use a condensed IMRaD structure.

Case reports run roughly 500 to 2,000 words and cover presentation, investigations, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome.

Both formats require documented written consent from the patient or a legal representative.

Both should follow the CARE guideline; several journals require a completed CARE checklist at submission.

Neither format supports causal claims, so framing matters: report what was observed, not what was proven.

Clinical trial reports

A journal article reporting a clinical trial follows the structure of an original research article, plus trial-specific requirements: the registration number, the registration date, the approved protocol, and a CONSORT flow diagram.

A note on terminology. In regulatory practice, a clinical study report is a specific document defined by ICH E3 and submitted to agencies such as the FDA or EMA. It is not a journal article. When a journal invites a clinical trial report, it means the manuscript version, not the regulatory dossier.

Consensus statements and clinical practice guidelines

These formats translate evidence into recommendations. They are usually authored by professional societies or expert panels rather than individual investigators, and they document how consensus was reached.

Consensus statement: records the collective position of an expert panel, often using a formal Delphi process.

Clinical practice guideline: issues graded, actionable recommendations linked to evidence quality.

Both require detailed conflict-of-interest disclosures for every panel member.

Both are typically commissioned; unsolicited submissions are rarely accepted.

Methods, Software, and Resource Papers

These papers publish the tools that other research depends on, and they often accumulate citations for years after publication.

Methods paper: introduces a new experimental, analytical, or statistical procedure, with validation against an established alternative.

Software or tool paper: describes a research application or package, its architecture, and its use cases. Journals such as JOSS, SoftwareX, and Bioinformatics specialize in these.

Lab resource or reagent paper: documents a cell line, plasmid, antibody, or model organism made available to the community.

Registered resource identifiers, version numbers, licenses, and a public repository link are usually mandatory.

Reviewers of these papers assess reproducibility above novelty. Most funders and hiring committees list them separately from peer-reviewed work, and many journals accept papers already posted as preprints.

Check the target journal’s preprint policy before posting; a small number of titles still decline preprinted manuscripts.

Link the preprint to the published version once the article appears, so citations consolidate.

Preprints establish priority on a finding and invite community feedback before formal review.

Medical preprints carry a standard caution that findings should not guide clinical practice.

Corrections, Errata, and Retractions

The published record is not fixed. Journals use several short notice types to amend it, and each is itself a citable, indexed item linked to the original article.

Corrigendum: corrects an author error that does not change the conclusions.

Erratum: corrects a publisher or production error.

Expression of concern: flags a serious unresolved question about an article while an investigation proceeds.

Retraction: withdraws an article whose findings are unreliable, whether through error or misconduct.

COPE, the Committee on Publication Ethics, publishes the flowcharts most journals follow for these decisions. Authors who spot a material error in their own published work should contact the editor promptly; self-reported corrections are viewed far more favorably than those raised by third parties.

Ethics, Registration, and Disclosure Requirements by Type

Several requirements are enforced at submission and cannot be added retrospectively. Confirm the format appears in the journal’s author guidelines and submission dropdown. Confirm you can meet the word limit without cutting essential methods. Confirm you hold the ethics approvals, registrations, and consents that the format requires.

Can you convert a rejected paper into a different article type?

Yes, and it is a routine strategy. A full paper rejected for limited scope often succeeds as a short communication, and a review rejected for breadth may fit as a mini-review or a perspective.

Rewrite rather than trim. Each format has its own structure, abstract style, and reference conventions.

Reframe the claim to match the new format: short formats support narrower claims than full papers.

Check whether the journal offers a transfer or cascade service, which forwards your manuscript and its reviews to a sister title.

Address the substantive reviewer criticisms first. Reformatting does not resolve a methodological objection.

Update the reporting checklist if the study design classification changes.

How do you find out which article types a journal accepts?

Check the journal’s Instructions for Authors page, which lists every accepted type with its word limit and structure. The article type dropdown in the submission system is the definitive confirmation.

Scan recent issues or the table of contents to see which formats actually appear in print.

Look for section labels on published articles, such as Brief Report or Perspective.

Read the aims and scope statement to check topical fit alongside format fit.

Email the editorial office with a presubmission inquiry when your work sits between 2 formats.

Note that limits differ between journals from the same publisher, so never assume a house-wide rule.

How Article Type Affects Metrics, Indexing, and Fees

Format choice has downstream consequences that authors often discover only after publication.

Citable items: research articles and reviews count in the impact factor denominator; editorials, letters, and news items typically do not.

Indexing: some databases index correspondence and abstracts differently from full articles, which affects discoverability and citation capture.

Article processing charges: many open access journals waive or reduce fees for letters, editorials, commentaries, and data notes.

Review speed: editorially reviewed formats can appear within weeks, while full research articles commonly take 3 to 12 months.

Assessment: most funders and hiring panels weight peer-reviewed primary research above correspondence, though review articles often attract more citations.

This article was
