Think of them as autocomplete on steroids. The tools analyze vast datasets and then come up with combinations of words that \u201cmake sense\u201d based on your prompt. They do not actually understand your research question or methodology.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Not_seeing_the_paper_as_a_whole\"><\/span>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not seeing the paper as a whole<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Professional editors, like those at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editage.com\/\">Editage<\/a>, view your paper as a whole and can spot logic gaps or inconsistencies between sections. They can tell you, for example, whether your claims in the Discussion aren\u2019t really supported by your results, or whether you\u2019ve not reported results for a certain subsection of your sample.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Distortions_in_meaning\"><\/span>3. Distortions in meaning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI tools can excel at making you sound smooth and readable. But while &#8220;smoothening&#8221; sentences, they may introduce subtle meaning changes. Let\u2019s take the sentence<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVitamin B12 deficiency was associated with increased abdominal adiposity\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AI might make the sentence more crisp and concise by revising it as \u201cVitamin B12 deficiency increases abdominal adiposity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s wrong here is that the original sentence makes it clear to the reader that you\u2019ve done a test of <em>association<\/em>. The revised sentence has a cause-and-effect implication, which I would more commonly use when I\u2019m reporting the results of a <em>regression<\/em> analysis. Lack of Vitamin B12 is merely \u201cassociated\u201d with greater belly fat, in that lots of people who lack Vitamin B12 have more belly fat too. But does lack of Vitamin B12 <em>cause<\/em> your belly fat to increase? Or does having a lot of belly fat cause a deficiency in Vitamin B12? The original sentence is purposely vague here because the researcher(s) concerned have just found an association or relationship. They don\u2019t have evidence about causation. A human professional editor can appreciate the subtleties of \u201cis associated with an increase\u201d and avoid tampering with the wording.<\/p>\n<p>A 2026 study [1] comparing 2 LLMs and human-based editing found that LLMs made much more corrections than the human editor did, <em>but<\/em> that more than 30% of the LLMs\u2019 corrections were judged as unnecessary or even <em>worsening<\/em> the text. The authors in fact warned that over-editing by LLMs may be problematic for ESL authors, who may adopt AI recommendations without critically examining them.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Exaggeration_of_results\"><\/span>4. Exaggeration of results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like I explained previously, LLMs are all about predicting <em>words<\/em>. There\u2019s a subtle difference between \u201cThe results suggest\u201d and \u201cThe results show\u201d for example. \u201cSuggest\u201d is used when there\u2019s a greater doubt: maybe you\u2019re conducting just a preliminary study or your study lacks statistical power. Human editors realize that some results or outcomes should <em>not <\/em>be made \u201ccatchy\u201d and that exaggerating results can have serious implications. Describing your underpowered, cross-sectional study as \u201cproving\u201d that dairy consumption increases systemic vascular resistance is ethically shady, and you\u2019ll probably get a lot of flak from more knowledgeable researchers in the field.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Hallucinations\"><\/span>5. Hallucinations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yet another problem with \u201clanguage predicting\u201d LLMs: they can generate lots of plausible stuff that isn\u2019t really true. Right back in 2023, soon after ChatGPT came out, researchers found it producing fabricated or incorrect citations and references,[2] and the problems persist in GPT 3.5 and 4 [3]. When you get AI to edit your research paper, you\u2019ve no guarantee that it\u2019s not introducing its own fabrications.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Risk_of_bias\"><\/span>6. Risk of bias<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>LLMs are trained on massive datasets, which is what makes them sound almost human at times. But did you think of where these datasets come from? The majority of these are in English and from a Western audience. A recent preprint shows that LLMs can be biased towards Western content [4], for something as simple as movie recommendations. The gender, cultural, sexual, or racial bias in LLM\u2019s training data can extend into your research paper, e.g., by using male pronouns for doctors and female pronouns for nurses or by using terms like \u201csexual preference\u201d instead of \u201csexual orientation\u201d when describing LGBTQ+ people. In another study on using LLMs for summarization, LLMs changed the sentiment of the content [5]\u00a0in ~26% of the cases.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Lack_of_scientific_accuracy\"><\/span>7. Lack of scientific accuracy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>LLMs may use terms and phrases in a general sense, rather than what is scientifically accurate. For example, Pakistan is a <em>first-world country <\/em>from a political science perspective as it was explicitly aligned with the US during the Cold War. But in lay language, \u201cfirst world\u201d refers to high-income, developed countries, and an LLM may therefore describe Pakistan as a third-world (i.e., less developed) country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_combine_AI_and_professional_editing\"><\/span>How to combine AI and professional editing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Just because AI can make mistakes, you don\u2019t need to swear off it entirely.
