The tendency of people to blame external factors for their actions and internal factors for the actions of others is referred to as actor-observer bias. Such bias comes into play when we, as actors, explain our actions as being influenced by external stimuli and not by any personality trait, and we, as observers, explain the same actions by others as their personality trait, discounting the situational factors. <\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, people tend to attribute different characteristics to their <\/span>own<\/span> actions and that of others. An actor would explain an exact situation or action in very different terms than an observer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This has profound implications for everyday interactions and scientific research. It is important to understand cognitive bias as it influences our thinking, perceptions, and assumptions. Actor-observer bias can then unintentionally influence researchers to be biased as they engage in research. For example, it can affect how they observe, record, or interpret information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
