ChatGPT for research

In the field of research, ChatGPT is viewed as a tool that can enable researchers and students to have access to information, data, trends, and analysis within seconds. In fact, ChatGPT and other similar AI platforms are being used to save time as it automates key tasks for researchers. However, in the field of academics and research ChatGPT needs to be viewed as a complementary tool and not one replacing human analysis. As it is trained on generic data, early career researchers and scholars must be cautious as responses and analysis generated by AI driven tools like ChatGPT could suffer from contextual limitations.

Limitations of ChatGPT

  • Original thinking and ideas are important in academic writing and research. However, ChatGPT is trained on existing text and therefore the output generated does not contain any original contribution, but a collation and synthesis of data it has been trained on.
  • Given that the training data of ChatGPT may contain biases, the output can reflect these leading to a perpetuation of such content.
  • The responses of ChatGPT depends on the prompts given which leads to variations.
  • ChatGPT is trained on a wide range of sources. Hence it is not clear from where it has synthesized the information. Further, since it is trained on generic data, it lacks domain specific expertise.

Despite its limitations, however, it can still be used for a few key tasks as discussed in the following section.

Uses of ChatGPT for your research

Generating research questions:

Researchers can take the help of ChatGPT for formulating clear research questions. By providing a prompt for research questions to a given topic, ChatGPT can generate several possible responses. Additionally, by feeding the model with relevant information or appropriate prompts that specify certain aspects that you wish to explore, or focusing more on a generated response, you can keep engaging with ChatGPT to narrow down on the research questions. However, review the information generated for its relevance and adapt the questions to your requirements.

Creating outlines:

By providing your topic, research objectives, arguments or ideas, evidence and so forth, you can ask ChatGPT to prepare an outline for your paper. By doing so, researchers can can establish a framework for their work and ensure better coherence and a logical progression in their narratives. The number of paragraphs required in the outline can also be specified. Accordingly, an outline will be created. Examine this for any inconsistencies and edit it to make it appropriate for your study.

Summarizing or Paraphrasing content:

ChatGPT can help in summarizing or paraphrasing by giving a prompt to do so for a given text. It provides you different options for paraphrasing. Given that ChatGPT can quickly extract key insights or distill the essence of voluminous literature, researchers can achieve more work in a short time. However, remember, that there are possibilities for inaccurate, biased, or false information to also crop up. Hence, always read the summary closely and cross-check the information with credible sources.

Creating the abstract or introduction:

ChatGPT can help create an introduction to your study when you provide it with information on the context, significance, and objectives of the study. Similarly, the complex information in the paper can be easily summarized into an abstract highlighting the key findings and significance of the study. Keywords can also be generated with the help of ChatGPT.

Generating titles for research:

Based on the key information you provide such as the topic, objectives, methodology and key findings, ChatGPT can analyze the information to provide recommendations on possible titles for your study. An entire title page can also be generated this way.

To obtain optimum results, it is essential that you constantly work and converse with ChatGPT through follow-up questions on the information you are seeking. Remember to provide the right context of your question and be specific in the question and kind of information you are looking for.

Verification of outputs

ChatGPT can be a valuable research tool particularly as an initial resource or providing guidance for writing your research paper or exploring a topic. The bulk of the research process, however, should be defined by the researcher’s original thinking, writing and the use of primary and multiple credible sources. ChatGPT has the risk of its output not always being accurate.

Moreover, since it works by detecting patterns, the output may not be original, appropriate, or un-biased. The data that it is trained on may contain information that is prejudiced or false or not up-to-date. Hence, it is important that authors always verify the content and apply further judgment and analysis. Furthermore, do not use the text as-is generated by the ChatGPT nor pass it as your own. This amounts to plagiarism and cheating.

Get FTR Case Study

R Discovery, an AI-powered literature search and research reading platform, has changed how academics discover and read research. With a personalized reading experience and access to high-quality research in one place, R Discovery has become the most loved app in its space. Today, R Discovery’s more than 3 million users can add their institutional credentials to instantly access full-text papers from major academic publishers directly in the mobile app. Powered by an early integration with GetFTR, R Discovery empowers users to add their institutional details to their profiles and read more full-text articles, leading to 2x engagement on the platform.

Three years after integrating GetFTR and providing uninterrupted access to high-impact research for academics, we examine the success story that enabled R Discovery to benefit the global academic community and increase readership for its publisher partners.

The Challenge: Barriers to accessing full-text research articles published in top academic journals

Academics need to keep up with the latest research in order to stay current in their subject area, build their own research projects, and help advance knowledge in their field. Yet, when searching for research online, they often come across relevant articles only to find that they are behind paywalls. The inability to access articles published by the world’s leading publishers can be disappointing and frustrating, limiting the dissemination of important findings and putting a halt on scientific progress. While there has been a move to open access over the past few decades, some high-impact articles still require subscriptions before they can be accessed. This makes it very difficult for researchers with limited resources to stay updated with literature.

Moreover, many researchers are unaware that their institutes hold journal subscriptions that allow them to access the articles they wish to read. And even if they know about this, traditional library platforms are often clunky and difficult to use, restricted to university library computers (IP-based), or not linked to platforms where researchers are discovering content. Inadequate or improper use leads to a lower ROI on the subscriptions that the library pays for, leading to a loss-loss scenario for both the library and the researchers it serves.

The Solution: Partnering with GetFTR to enable institutional access to full-text research articles

Built by a team of experts with 21+ years of experience in academia, R Discovery quickly recognized this problem and worked to combine research discovery with full-text access. It was one of the first platforms to integrate GetFTR in January 2021, enabling real-time checks and access to full-text journal articles through institutional subscriptions. Researchers could access full-text articles when they needed and on the device of their choice, libraries saw good ROI for journal subscriptions, and publishers had better readership, creating a win-win-win scenario for everyone via R Discovery. Access to the most up-to-date version of full-text articles on R Discovery proved invaluable during the pandemic when researchers couldn’t physically visit their institute libraries, and this capability still continues to be one of the most loved and used features on R Discovery.

Today, R Discovery’s 3 million users can use this feature to read the best papers from over 250 million research articles, including more than 150 million peer-reviewed articles and over 40 million open access research papers. If they find a full-text paper behind paywalls, they can add their institute’s details to their profiles, allowing GetFTR to instantly check with publishers to confirm the institute has the relevant subscriptions. If the relevant subscriptions are in place, GetFTR gives researchers full access to published journal articles that are current, vetted, and relevant to their search specifications. This allows researchers to read full-text articles from anywhere in the world through R Discovery, with no need for additional software or updates.

The Impact: R Discovery gains 2x user engagement and 3x retention

The GetFTR integration had a significant positive impact for R Discovery users. Researchers who added their institution to their profiles derived exponentially higher value on R Discovery, resulting in 3.3x higher retention and 2x higher engagement rates than benchmarks across all registered users.

A quick look at the R Discovery usage patterns reveal that:

  • With GetFTR’s real-time entitlement checks that enabled access to a wider, broader range of scholarly literature, users could discover the latest, most relevant research papers, save them in relevant reading lists, and obtain full texts for references as needed.
  • R Discovery recorded a 20% jump in full-text views for those who added their institution to their profiles. This signifies a major enhancement in researchers’ ability to delve deeper into their chosen subjects, leading to more comprehensive and insightful research.
  • The institutional workflow on R Discovery saw interest from researchers in both developed and emerging countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.

advanced economies

  • Researchers from leading universities used their institutional credentials to unlock access to full-text papers across major subject areas through R Discovery. Take a look at the top five institutes in North America, Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa where it was used.

top institutions

  • Several leading publishers saw higher readership as their articles were accessed and read by highly engaged users via R Discovery’s institutional workflow. Researchers read most articles from top publishers such as Wiley, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and SAGE.

A conceptual framework includes key concepts, variables, relationships, and assumptions that guide the academic inquiry. It establishes the theoretical underpinnings and provides a lens through which researchers can analyze and interpret data. A conceptual framework draws upon existing theories, models, or established bodies of knowledge to provide a structure for understanding the research problem. It defines the scope of research, identifying relevant variables, establishing research questions, and guiding the selection of appropriate methodologies and data analysis techniques.

Conceptual frameworks can be written or visual. Other types of conceptual framework representations might be taxonomic (verbal description categorizing phenomena into classes without showing relationships between classes) or mathematical descriptions (expression of phenomena in the form of mathematical equations).

Figure 1: Definition of a conceptual framework explained diagrammatically

Purpose and Importance of a Conceptual Framework in Research

The importance of a conceptual framework in research cannot be understated, irrespective of the field of study. It is important for the following reasons:

  • It clarifies the context of the study.
  • It justifies the study to the reader.
  • It helps you check your own understanding of the problem and the need for the study.
  • It illustrates the expected relationship between the variables and defines the objectives for the research.
  • It helps further refine the study objectives and choose the methods appropriate to meet them.

What to Include in a Conceptual Framework

Essential elements that a conceptual framework should include are as follows:

  • Overarching research question(s)
  • Study parameters
  • Study variables
  • Potential relationships between those variables.

The sources for these elements of a conceptual framework are literature, theory, and experience or prior knowledge.

How to Make a Conceptual Framework

Now that you know the essential elements, your next question will be how to make a conceptual framework.

For this, start by identifying the most suitable set of questions that your research aims to answer. Next, categorize the various variables. Finally, perform a rigorous analysis of the collected data and compile the final results to establish connections between the variables.

In short, the steps are as follows:

  • Choose appropriate research questions.
  • Define the different types of variables involved.
  • Determine the cause-and-effect relationships.

Be sure to make use of arrows and lines to depict the presence or absence of correlational linkages among the variables.

Developing a Conceptual Framework

Researchers should be adept at developing a conceptual framework. Here are the steps for developing a conceptual framework:

1. Identify a research question

Your research question guides your entire study, making it imperative to invest time and effort in formulating a question that aligns with your research goals and contributes to the existing body of knowledge. This step involves the following:

  • Choose a broad topic of interest
  • Conduct background research
  • Narrow down the focus
  • Define your goals
  • Make it specific and answerable
  • Consider significance and novelty
  • Seek feedback.

2. Choose independent and dependent variables

The dependent variable is the main outcome you want to measure, explain, or predict in your study. It should be a variable that can be observed, measured, or assessed quantitatively or qualitatively. Independent variables are the factors or variables that may influence, explain, or predict changes in the dependent variable.

Choose independent and dependent variables for your study according to the research objectives, the nature of the phenomenon being studied, and the specific research design. The identification of variables is rooted in existing literature, theories, or your own observations.

3. Consider cause-and-effect relationships

To better understand and communicate the relationships between variables in your study, cause-and-effect relationships need to be visualized. This can be done by using path diagrams, cause-and-effect matrices, time series plots, scatter plots, bar charts, or heatmaps.

4. Identify other influencing variables

Besides the independent and dependent variables, researchers must understand and consider the following types of variables:

  • Moderating variable: A variable that influences the strength or direction of the relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable.
  • Mediating variable: A variable that explains the relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable and clarifies how the independent variable affects the dependent variable.
  • Control variable: A variable that is kept constant or controlled to avoid the influence of other factors that may affect the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
  • Confounding variable: A type of unmeasured variable that is related to both the independent and dependent variables.

Example of a Conceptual Framework

Examining worked examples across different fields illustrates how a conceptual framework adapts to different research contexts. The following two examples demonstrate its application in education and in organizational management.

Example 1: The Impact of Social Media Usage on Academic Performance

This example explores how social media use among college students affects academic outcomes.

Variable Type Variable(s) Indicators
Independent variable Social media usage Frequency of use, time spent daily, platforms used
Dependent variable Academic performance Grade point average, exam scores, class attendance
Mediating variable Study habits Time spent studying, study environment quality, use of study aids
Moderating variable Self-discipline Self-regulation ability, distraction management, goal prioritization
Confounding variables Socioeconomic status, prior academic achievement Family income, previous GPA, access to academic resources

In this framework, social media usage is hypothesized to affect academic performance indirectly through study habits (the mediating variable). Self-discipline moderates the strength of this relationship: students with higher self-discipline may study effectively regardless of their social media use, while those with lower self-discipline may be more negatively affected. Socioeconomic status and prior academic achievement are identified as confounding variables to be controlled.

Figure 2: Visual representation of a conceptual framework for the topic “The Impact of Social Media Usage on Academic Performance among College Students”

Example 2: Flexible Work Arrangements and Employee Productivity

This example is drawn from organizational management research and demonstrates how the framework applies in a business context.

Variable Type Variable(s) Indicators
Independent variable Flexible work arrangements Remote work availability, hybrid scheduling, flexible hours policy
Dependent variables Employee productivity; job satisfaction; retention Task completion rate; motivation scores; turnover rates
Mediating variable Work-life balance Perceived boundary between personal and professional time
Moderating variable Role type Whether the role requires physical presence or is location-independent
Control variables Industry, team size, prior productivity baseline Sector classification, number of direct reports, pre-intervention performance data

This framework proposes that flexible arrangements improve productivity and satisfaction through the mediating effect of improved work-life balance. Role type moderates this effect: roles requiring physical presence may not benefit from flexibility in the same way as knowledge-work roles.

How Is a Conceptual Framework Used in Qualitative Research?

Qualitative research uses conceptual frameworks differently from quantitative research. Rather than specifying hypothesized causal relationships between measured variables, a qualitative framework defines the key concepts the researcher will explore and the theoretical perspective that will guide interpretation of the data.

Key differences in how the framework operates in qualitative research:

Dimension Qualitative Approach
Terminology Favors ‘constructs’ and ‘themes’ over ‘variables’; relationships are described as associations or patterns rather than causal links.
Framework origin Often drawn from social theories such as feminist theory, critical theory, symbolic interactionism, or constructivism.
Visual representation Less common; when used, diagrams are looser and show conceptual associations rather than directional causal arrows.
Flexibility The framework is explicitly provisional and expected to evolve as data collection reveals new themes or contradictions.
Role in analysis Guides coding, theme development, and interpretation rather than hypothesis testing.
Placement in the study Often presented at the end of the literature review, acknowledging that it emerged from engagement with the literature rather than preceding it.

Qualitative Framework Example: Gender and Power in Healthcare Settings

A researcher studying how gender dynamics influence nurses’ decision-making authority might use feminist theory as the theoretical perspective and build a conceptual framework around the following constructs:

  • Gender roles: societal expectations assigned to individuals based on gender
  • Institutional power structures: formal and informal hierarchies within healthcare organizations
  • Perceived autonomy: nurses’ self-reported sense of decision-making authority
  • Patient outcomes: measurable results associated with nursing decisions

Rather than testing a hypothesis, the researcher uses this framework to focus data collection (interview questions, observational categories) and to organize thematic analysis. The framework may be revised after early analysis reveals that informal peer networks play a more central role than anticipated.

Common Qualitative Theoretical Perspectives and Their Conceptual Constructs

Theoretical Perspective Core Constructs Typical Research Context
Critical theory Power relations, historical context, structural inequality, social reproduction Studies of systemic inequality, policy analysis, education access
Feminist theory Gender roles, power dynamics, intersectionality, societal norms Studies of gender representation, workplace equity, healthcare access
Symbolic interactionism Shared symbols, personal interpretation, meaning-making, social context Studies of communication, identity, community dynamics
Constructivism Knowledge as constructed, lived experience, context-dependence, reflexivity Studies of learning, meaning, subjective experience

What Is the Difference Between a Conceptual Framework and a Theoretical Framework?

This distinction is among the most frequently misunderstood in academic research. Both frameworks provide a lens for interpreting data, but they differ in their origin, structure, and application.

Aspect Conceptual Framework Theoretical Framework Key Implication
Origin Built by the researcher from multiple sources Drawn from one or more established theories Conceptual frameworks are more flexible and study-specific
Purpose Defines key concepts and their relationships for a specific study Explains or predicts phenomena using existing theory Theoretical frameworks rely on prior scholarly consensus
Basis Synthesized from literature, prior studies, and researcher reasoning Grounded in published, peer-reviewed theory Conceptual frameworks allow adaptation to novel contexts
Flexibility Can be revised as the study progresses Less flexible; the chosen theory guides interpretation Conceptual frameworks are especially suited to exploratory research
Common use Qualitative, mixed methods, and exploratory quantitative research Quantitative and confirmatory research Choice depends on research question type and design
Example A researcher-built model linking social media use, study habits, and academic performance Applying Social Learning Theory to explain peer influence on behavior Neither type is superior; the choice depends on the study

A study typically uses either a conceptual framework or a theoretical framework, not both simultaneously. The exception is a study with two distinct and unrelated research components, each requiring its own lens. In practice:

  • Use a theoretical framework when an established theory is a strong fit for the research question and the goal is to test or extend that theory.
  • Use a conceptual framework when no single existing theory fully accounts for the study’s variables, or when the study draws concepts from several fields.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Conceptual Framework

A conceptual framework offers significant benefits to research design and execution, but it also introduces potential limitations that researchers should acknowledge and manage.

Advantages Disadvantages
Provides a clear, structured direction for the study May introduce researcher bias if the framework reflects the researcher’s assumptions too strongly
Ensures all relevant variables are identified before data collection begins Can oversimplify complex, dynamic real-world relationships
Supports hypothesis development and operationalization of constructs Requires substantial familiarity with existing literature to construct well
Promotes coherence between the research question, data collection, and analysis May need revision as research progresses, which requires careful documentation
Helps identify gaps in existing research and justifies the study’s contribution A poorly constructed framework can misdirect the study and lead to invalid conclusions
Strengthens the validity and credibility of the research design Reviewers and supervisors may disagree on the appropriate framework, creating ambiguity

Best practice: treat the framework as a transparent, documented, and revisable tool rather than a fixed constraint. Acknowledge its limitations explicitly in the methodology section of the study.

Where Does the Conceptual Framework Go in a Research Paper or Dissertation?

Placement varies by institution and field. The most common approaches are:

Placement Option Rationale and When to Use It
End of the literature review chapter Positions the framework as emerging from the researcher’s synthesis of prior work; the most widely recommended placement in qualitative and mixed-methods research.
Start of the methodology chapter Signals that the framework directly governs data collection and analysis decisions; common in quantitative research.
Chapter 1 (Introduction) Some institutions require a brief statement of the framework in the introduction to orient readers early; a full elaboration still belongs in Chapter 2 or 3.
As a standalone chapter Used in doctoral dissertations where the framework is particularly complex or represents an original theoretical contribution.

When uncertain, consult the institutional guidelines for the thesis or dissertation, the supervisor, or published dissertations from the same institution or field.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a moderating variable and a mediating variable?

Moderating and mediating variables are easily confused. A moderating variable affects the direction and strength of this relationship, whereas a mediating explains how two variables relate.

What is the difference between independent variables, dependent variables, and confounding variables?

Independent variables are the variables manipulated to affect the outcome of an experiment (e.g., the dose of a fat-loss drug administered to rats). Dependent variables are variables being measured or observed in an experiment (e.g., changes in rat body weight as a result of the drug). A confounding variable distorts or masks the effects of the variables being studied because it is associated both with dependent variable and with the independent variable. For instance, in this example, pre-existing metabolic dysfunction in some rats could interact differently with the drug being studied and also affect rat body weight.

Should I have more than one dependent or independent variable in a study?

The need for more than one dependent or independent variable in a study depends on the research question, study design, and relationships being investigated. Note the following when making this decision for your research:

  • If your research question involves exploring the relationships between multiple variables or factors, it may be appropriate to have more than one dependent or independent variable.
  • If you have specific hypotheses about the relationships between several variables, it may be necessary to include multiple dependent or independent variables.
  • Adequate resources, sample size, and data collection methods should be considered when determining the number of dependent and independent variables to include.

What is a confounding variable?

A confounding variable is not the main focus of the study but can unintentionally influence the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Confounding variables can introduce bias and give rise to misleading conclusions. These variables must be controlled to ensure that any observed relationship is genuinely due to the independent variable.

What is a control variable?

A control variable is something not of interest to the study’s objectives but is kept constant because it could influence the outcomes. Control variables can help prevent research biases and allow for a more accurate assessment of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Examples are (i) testing all participants at the same time (e.g., in the morning) to minimize the potential effects of circadian rhythms, (ii) ensuring that instruments are calibrated consistently before each measurement to minimize the influence of measurement errors, and (iii) randomization of participants across study groups.

Can a conceptual framework be revised during the research process?

Yes, and in qualitative research in particular, revision is expected. As data collection and analysis progress, researchers frequently discover constructs or relationships that were not anticipated in the original framework. Any revision should be clearly documented, with a rationale explaining what changed and why. In quantitative research, significant revisions to the framework after data collection can raise concerns about hypothesis testing integrity; pre-registration of the framework before data collection helps address this concern.

Do all research studies need a conceptual framework?

Most empirical studies benefit from an explicit conceptual framework, but it is not always labeled as such. Purely descriptive studies may not require a framework that specifies causal relationships, but they still benefit from a clear definition of the concepts being described. Literature reviews and meta-analyses use a framework to define the scope of the review and the inclusion criteria. Some qualitative traditions, such as grounded theory, deliberately avoid constructing a framework in advance to allow concepts to emerge from the data; in these cases, the framework is built as a product of the research rather than a starting point.

Where exactly does the conceptual framework go in a dissertation or thesis?

There is no single universal rule for a dissertation or thesis. The most common placements are at the end of the literature review chapter, where it serves as a synthesis of prior work, or at the start of the methodology chapter, where it signals how it will guide data collection and analysis. Some institutions require a brief introduction of the framework in Chapter 1 with full elaboration later. A small number of programs treat it as a standalone chapter. The governing factors are: institutional guidelines, the supervisor’s preferences, and the nature of the research. When in doubt, examine recent dissertations from the same institution and field for precedent.

Is it a problem if the conceptual framework does not match an established theory?

No. A conceptual framework is not required to align with any single established theory. It is researcher-constructed and may draw on concepts from multiple theories, prior empirical findings, practitioner knowledge, and the researcher’s own reasoning. The requirement is not theoretical alignment but logical coherence: all elements of the framework should be justified by evidence or sound argument, and the relationships depicted should be defensible. If no established theory covers the research context, constructing an original conceptual framework is a legitimate and often valuable scholarly contribution.

Introducing Multiple Reading Feeds for Separate Research Projects

Challenges with handling multiple research projects

Researchers often tend to work on multiple research projects simultaneously. These could be in similar or different stages of progress and researchers need to be on top of all the work being published around these projects. In some cases, researchers need to compile and understand the research that has already been done and build further hypotheses. In other cases, they may need to track new findings that could be relevant for their ongoing research project or check if similar research has been published in some other part of the world. In all these situations, juggling multiple research projects can take a toll on researchers. They need to browse through various academic paper repositories to discover, organize, and comprehend literature for each of these separate research projects.

At R Discovery, we know how important it is for researchers to keep up with literature that is relevant and useful for their work. This is why we’re adding a new feature to the most loved literature search and research reading app that helps its over 2.7 million users and others across the world efficiently manage separate research projects.

Introducing multiple feeds, an asset for busy researchers

While keeping up with multiple research projects has long been a challenge, R Discovery realized that this specific researcher problem could be easily solved using available AI technology. For instance, if a researcher can get AI-curated reading recommendations for each of his/her research projects, then they can reduce the time and effort needed to discover relevant research. When looking into how we could make this happen, we realized that our platform would need to have:

  • a trusted research paper repository that is updated regularly, so that researchers need not go to multiple websites to discover research papers.
  • a strong AI algorithm or recommender system that can understand a researcher’s requirements, exactly how they are in his/her mind and suggest the right reads.
  • an efficient system that can simultaneously maintain multiple reading feeds so users can track each of their research projects separately.

Fortunately, R Discovery has all of these requirements and more, which allows it to introduce multiple reading feeds tailored to bring more clarity and organization into the lives of researchers handling many research projects at once. This latest feature is based on solid foundation of over 120 million articles, an academic paper repository that is updated daily, one of the best recommendation engines, and robust AI algorithms. With multiple feeds, R Discovery has taken a big step toward saving more time and energy for researchers who need to progress on multiple research projects simultaneously.

How to create multiple feeds on R Discovery

Working on multiple research projects and keeping track and making progress on all of them has been hard work, and R Discovery is helping researchers do that better. Within a month of launching this premium feature, we’ve already got a lot of appreciation, with about 20% of our R Discovery Prime users already creating new additional feeds over and above their default reading recommendations feed.

If you’re managing more than one research project, you should definitely try out R Discovery and set up your reading feed/s to get daily reading recommendations in your areas of interest. Just follow the simple step-by-step instructions as shown below.

1. Researchers can click on the dropdown given in top header to create multiple feeds on R Discovery, with a choice to set up different feeds based on specific topics or areas of interest.

Introducing Multiple Reading Feeds for Separate Research Projects

2. Each reading feed can have different topics, with a high-moderate-low weightage mentioned for each, which helps the platform identify the most relevant recommendations for every project.

Introducing Multiple Reading Feeds for Separate Research Projects

3. Researchers can also choose to like or dislike the research papers recommended, which helps the algorithm understand your preferences and train it to deliver better results over time.

Introducing Multiple Reading Feeds for Separate Research Projects

4. From the multiple feeds set up, researchers can choose one as a default feed to receive regular notifications on the latest updated, delivered directly to their mobile and email inbox.

Introducing Multiple Reading Feeds for Separate Research Projects

5. Researchers can save any papers they find useful from their reading lists to their library. They can create new reading lists; move papers between lists; edit, delete, and do much more to keep everything they need organized.

Introducing Multiple Reading Feeds for Separate Research Projects

The best part is that R Discovery’s system is smart enough to start the app on the last project you left open, which means that researchers can simply start from where they left.

Looking forward to a better future

Apart from multiple feeds, R Discovery brings together a plethora of advanced features to help users discover, access, read, listen, organize, and share research on the best literature search and reading platform. Researchers can discover research papers from the more than 120 million articles in its research paper repository, sourced from top academic publishers and content aggregators. They can convert any scientific paper to its audio form and listen to the complete paper or its summary to stay updated on the go. Users also have a choice of translating and reading any paper in their own language, auto syncing their R Discovery library with their preferred reference manager, and collaborating with peers on any literature review. 8 Essential Skills to Supercharge Your Academic CareerPursuing an academic career can be exciting and rewarding, given its scope for discovering and developing new and innovative solutions to issues plaguing society. However, this path is riddled with challenges that need to be overcome. Researchers need to procure grants and fellowships, conduct quality research while managing other responsibilities, and ensure their scientific papers are featured in leading, high-impact journals. To put it simply, building a successful academic career requires commitment, intellectual rigor, and the strength to persevere and persist even when the odds seem against you.

To achieve their academic career goals, researchers need to develop several key skills to help you deal with the challenges and competition that is part of a career in academia. This article lists some of the most essential skills that researchers must develop to succeed.

An ability for analytical reasoning and critical thinking

Perhaps one of the most important skills that one needs to develop for a successful academic career is the ability to conduct research, analyze data, and think critically and creatively about complex problems in their field of study. To achieve their academic and career goals, researchers must learn how to develop research hypothesis, design experiments, and question existing assumptions. They must have an innate ability to identify gaps in knowledge, recognize patterns, draw conclusions from empirical evidence and generate innovative solutions to problems

An ability to set clear goals and plan ahead to achieve them

Given that a career in academia can often be unstructured, it is important for early career researchers to be able to set clear, realistic academic and career goals and persist in their efforts to achieve them even in the face of challenges. This requires being organized and consistent and allocating time to projects and personal responsibilities alike. Researchers must understand the importance of setting both short- and long-term goals so that they can remain on track with their PhD or research project.

An ability to collaborate and work with diverse teams

A career in academic research often entails working in teams that are sometimes multi-disciplinary and spread across organizations. Being able to collaborate with peers, supervisors and industry partners when conducting research requires patience, understanding and teamwork. Developing the ability to share ideas and work together to achieve common academic goals effectively helps researchers build strong relationships. This can, in the long run, prove beneficial to secure adequate funding, access necessary resources, and gain the vital support that researchers need for professional growth.

An ability to write and produce high-quality academic papers

Writing is a skill that needs to be developed and academic writing, with its stringent quality standards, requires extra effort. Developing academic writing skills is essential for researchers who have to be able to consistently produce clear and concise research papers, grant proposals, and other academic documents. Well-written research papers have a higher chance of being published in leading international journals and provides researchers with greater visibility and recognition as they build their academic career.

An ability or organize information and manage data effectively

Data management is an important skill that researchers must possess if they are to grow and succeed in their academic careers. Researchers are typically expected to undertake extensive reading, gather information, conduct experiments, and analyze large amounts of data. Being able to organize these huge tranches of information and data in a manageable manner is crucial to succeed. It is also important to have some knowledge of how to create an electronic or paper-based data storage system and develop cataloguing and organizing skills for source material so that it can be easily retrieved later if required.

An ability to handle research projects and budgets efficiently

Researchers at some point in their academic career will be tasked with conducting research experiments that will require basic project management skills. Given that they will need to make projects, create detailed strategies, and plans and manage finances, it is important that they develop these skills early on in their academic journey. You will need to know not only how to calculate and present the amount of money you may require; you will also need to record and account for the resources or money spent.

An ability to manage unexpected changes and resolve conflicts

A career in academia and science can often be exciting as it involves exploring and discovering new ideas and solutions. However, most researchers encounter change and conflict at some point in their careers. Learning how to manage these difficulties is essential if you are to navigate through complex situations, stay focused on goals, and ultimately be able to succeed in your academic career.

An ability to stay centered and motivated despite challenges

It is common to find early career researchers giving up half-way when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. Additionally, setbacks in experiments or research work, can be extremely demotivating and can cause researchers to lose sight of their academic and career goals. Developing an ability to stay motivated and maintain a strong sense of purpose and enthusiasm for your work, while difficult, is an essential skill that researchers must develop to be successful.

Today, early career researchers can access online resources that provide valuable insights and resources to help them build their careers. Online learning platforms like R Upskill by Researcher.Life offer 100+ expert-led courses that focus on both personal and professional skills. The post Journal Citation Report 2023: Highlights & Key Takeaways appeared first on .

]]>
A few months ago, Clarivate Plc released its Journal Citation Report 2023, providing publisher-neutral data through a range of metrics, including the Journal Impact Factor and the Journal Citation Indicator. This year, the annual report extended its coverage to provide a Journal Impact Factor to all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection. By including the Arts and Humanities Citation Index and the Emerging Sources Citation Index, more than 9,000 journals from as many as 3,000 smaller publishers received the Journal Impact Factor for the first time.1

In this report summary, we delve into the purpose and importance of this annual report, outline the changes and key highlights of the Journal Citation Report 2023.

Importance of the Journal Citation Report

Since the first issue released in 1975, the Journal Citation Report has aimed to present researchers, librarians, and administrators with unique, objective information to help them evaluate the quality and importance of academic journals. Specifically, the annual report provides clarity on how the scholarly community is using a journal and the impact and relevance of journals in a specific field.

The Journal Citation Report is based on data from the Web of Science Core Collection, the largest publisher-neutral global citation database for journals, books, and conference proceedings. It covers journals that pass the Web of Science’s rigorous selection process that evaluates journals across 28 key parameters of quality, editorial vigor, impact, and other best practices. Only 15% of journals assessed pass this check, ensuring that insignificant or potentially fraudulent journals are eliminated.2

By giving its stamp of quality and approval to deserving journals, the Journal Citation Report allows for more meaningful comparisons and insights. Its descriptive data and compelling visualizations help publishers better manage journals in their portfolio and also empowers academics to:

  • Assess quality and impact of journals across key performance metrics
  • Understand the leading journals in different research categories
  • Shortlist the best journal in which to publish their ongoing research
  • Evaluate impact based on journals where they’ve published earlier research
  • Understand scholarly publishing landscape and assess significance of research output

Changes in Journal Citation Report 2023

Along with the increasing number of journals published, we’re also seeing more cases of questionable scholarly publishing practices. When releasing the report, Emmanuel Thiveaud, Senior Vice President for Research & Analytics, Academia & Government at Clarivate, said, “Research integrity is crucial for ensuring the credibility, reliability, and trustworthiness of scientific and scholarly record. This year we have taken significant additional steps to foster research integrity in the Web of Science as we seek to uphold the highest ethical standards and proactively contribute to the maintenance of public trust in scientific and scholarly research.”2

In its effort to continue as a trusted, transparent, and objective indicator of journal quality and impact, Journal Citation Report 2023 has made changes to expand its coverage and encourage the use of other indicators and descriptive data to evaluate journals.1

  • All journals that have passed the rigorous Web of Science quality checks were assigned a Journal Impact Factor. This allows them to demonstrate their significance and value to the academic community along with other highly cited journals.
  • In 2023, instead of three decimal places, the Journal Impact Factor was displayed with just one decimal point. This aims to persuade users to consider other metrics like the Journal Citation Indicator when comparing journals.

These changes apply to Journal Citation Reports 2023, with no other alterations planned for data from previous years. In the long run, the goal is to level the playing field for all quality journals, including open access journals, new or niche journals, and regional journals like those from the Global South.

Journal Citation Report 2023: Key Highlights

The Journal Citation Report seeks to adapt and evolve to the needs of the scholarly and academic research community by supporting a well-rounded, robust, and responsible method of research evaluation. The range of metrics employed for this has made it easier for users to do a multi-faceted journal analysis. Here are the key highlights from Journal Citation Report 2023.1,2

  • The Journal Impact Factor was assigned to 21,500+ high-quality journals across 254 research categories and 112 countries. These include:
    • 13,668 science journals
    • 7,123 social science journals
    • 3,248 arts & humanities journals
  • 9,136 journals from over 3,000 publishers received a Journal Impact Factor for the first time
  • More than 5,600 journals are entirely open access publications
  • About 8% more gold open access journals now have a Journal Impact Factor.
  • Journal Impact Factor granted to journals from Global South up at least 5%.

Clarivate reaffirms its commitment to both researchers and publishers as it evolves and adapts the Journal Citation Report to the fast-changing scholarly research landscape. Using trusted and verified tools to make scholarly evaluation reliable, the Journal Citation Report maintains the highest standards of integrity and validation as it helps the academic community make informed more decisions.

Key Takeaways

  • The limitations section should identify the most impactful constraints, describe how they may have affected results, and point toward avenues for future research.
  • Well-written limitations strengthen a paper’s credibility with peer reviewers and editors and increase the likelihood of citation by future researchers.
  • Limitations differ from delimitations: limitations are constraints outside your control, while delimitations are deliberate scope decisions you make before the study begins.

Introduction

Limitations of a study are the constraints, shortcomings, or weaknesses that may affect the interpretation, generalizability, or validity of research findings. They arise from factors that are largely outside the researcher’s control, such as restricted access to data, time and budget pressures, imperfect measurement tools, and characteristics of the available sample population. Unlike delimitations, which reflect deliberate choices made before the study begins, limitations emerge from practical realities encountered during the research process.

Limitations do not invalidate a study. Instead, they provide readers with the context needed to evaluate findings accurately. A transparent account of limitations signals scholarly rigor and prevents readers from overgeneralizing results to situations where the evidence does not support such conclusions.

Limitations vs. Delimitations: What Is the Difference?

These two terms are among the most frequently confused in academic research. The distinction is straightforward: limitations are constraints you did not choose, while delimitations are boundaries you deliberately set.

Feature Limitations Delimitations
Definition Weaknesses outside the researcher’s control Intentional scope decisions made by the researcher
Control Cannot be controlled or undone once encountered Fully controlled and chosen before the study begins
Location in paper Discussion section or end of study Chapter 1, alongside research aims and questions
Effect on study Reduces reliability or generalizability Narrows scope, improving focus and feasibility
Example Low survey response rate due to participant dropouts Choosing to study adults aged 25 to 40 only

A common mistake is listing delimitations in the limitations section. For example, choosing to study one country rather than five is a delimitation, not a limitation. The limitations section should contain only those factors that constrained your study in ways you could not prevent or fully resolve.

Why Should You Include Limitations in Your Research Paper?

Including a limitations section is both an ethical obligation and a practical benefit. It serves the reader, the scientific community, and the researcher equally.

  • Transparency and accountability: Openly stating limitations prevents misinterpretation of results and maintains the integrity of the scientific record.
  • Peer review credibility: Reviewers and editors respond positively to authors who demonstrate awareness of their study’s constraints. Concealing limitations is more likely to invite rejection than acknowledging them.
  • Future research roadmap: Limitations identify gaps in the literature and signal where further investigation is needed, making the paper more likely to be cited by subsequent researchers.
  • Critical thinking demonstration: Writing a limitations section proves that the researcher has reflected deeply on methodology, research design, and the real-world conditions of the study.
  • Legal and reputational protection: In applied fields such as medicine, public health, and education policy, overstating findings without noting limitations can lead to harmful misapplication of results.

Types of Research Limitations

Research limitations fall into several overlapping categories. The following taxonomy covers methodological, researcher-related, impact-related, ethical, temporal, and resource-based constraints.

Methodological Limitations

These limitations relate to the design and execution of the research itself.

Limitation Type Description Common Example
Sample size A sample that is too small may produce statistically unreliable results and prevent generalization. A qualitative study with only eight interview participants.
Sampling bias The method used to select participants may systematically exclude important subgroups. Convenience sampling from a single university campus.
Measurement error Survey scales, instruments, or observation tools may not capture the intended construct accurately. Using a general anxiety scale to measure domain-specific academic stress.
Self-reported data Participants may misremember, exaggerate, or underreport due to social desirability bias. Asking respondents to recall dietary habits from the previous month.
Lack of prior research Limited existing literature can make it difficult to situate findings or validate instruments. Researching a newly identified phenomenon with fewer than five prior studies.
Cross-sectional design Collecting data at a single point in time prevents analysis of changes or trends over time. Measuring student stress levels during one exam period only.
Control group absence Without a comparison group, it is difficult to establish causality. A pre-test post-test study with no untreated control condition.
Language limitations Studies conducted in one language may miss perspectives from non-English-speaking populations. A survey distributed only in English to a multilingual workforce.

Researcher-Related Limitations

These arise from the characteristics, position, or resources of the researcher.

  • Limited access to data: Restricted access to participants, organizations, proprietary databases, or classified records narrows the scope of the study.
  • Time constraints: Deadlines imposed by funding cycles, degree programs, or publication timelines may prevent a more thorough investigation.
  • Researcher bias: Personal assumptions, cultural background, and theoretical preferences can influence which data are collected, how they are coded, and what conclusions are drawn.
  • Positionality: The researcher’s role as an insider or outsider to the community being studied affects trust, access, and interpretation.
  • Resource limitations: Budget constraints may restrict sample size, the use of advanced instruments, or the number of data collection sites.

Impact and Generalizability Limitations

These limitations affect how broadly the findings can be applied.

  • Geographic specificity: Findings from a study conducted in one country, region, or city may not transfer to other contexts with different cultural, legal, or social conditions.
  • Population specificity: Results derived from one demographic group, age range, or clinical population may not apply to others.
  • Temporal specificity: Data collected during an unusual period, such as a pandemic, economic crisis, or policy transition, may not reflect typical conditions.
  • Species or experimental specificity: In life sciences, findings from animal models or in vitro experiments may not translate directly to human populations.

Ethical Limitations

Ethical constraints are a legitimate and important category of limitations that researchers frequently omit.

  • Informed consent restrictions: Some participants may limit which of their data can be used or retained after the study concludes.
  • IRB or ethics board constraints: Approval conditions may prohibit certain data collection methods, restrict follow-up contact, or require anonymization that reduces analytical precision.
  • Sensitive topic avoidance: Participants may decline to answer questions on stigmatized or legally sensitive topics, creating systematic gaps in the data.
  • Vulnerability protections: Additional safeguards required when studying minors, prisoners, or individuals with cognitive impairments can limit sample composition and data collection procedures.

Temporal Limitations

These relate to the timing and duration of data collection.

  • Single time point collection: Cross-sectional designs cannot determine whether the relationships observed are stable, emerging, or declining.
  • Short follow-up periods: Studies that track participants for weeks rather than months or years may miss delayed effects or long-term outcomes.
  • Historical context effects: Events occurring during the data collection window may confound results in ways that are difficult to disentangle.

How to Write the Limitations Section: A Step-by-Step Structure

A well-structured limitations section follows three sequential moves, each with a distinct purpose.

Step 1: The Announcing Move

Begin by clearly identifying the limitations that had the greatest potential impact on the quality of your findings or your ability to answer your research questions. Do not attempt to list every possible weakness. A focused account of two to four major limitations is more credible than an exhaustive catalogue.

Step 2: The Reflecting Move

This is the core of the section and should account for approximately 60 to 70 percent of the total word count. Explain the nature of each limitation and justify the choices made during the research process. Avoid being defensive. Acknowledge the constraint, explain why it could not be avoided or fully mitigated, and describe its probable effect on the findings.

Step 3: The Forward-Looking Move

Close the section by suggesting how the identified limitations could be addressed in future research. This transforms a list of weaknesses into a productive contribution to the scientific conversation. Concrete suggestions, such as recommending a longitudinal design, a larger probability sample, or multi-site data collection, are more useful than vague calls for additional study.

Hedging Language and Phrasing Templates

Academic limitations sections rely on hedging language to qualify claims appropriately without overstating the severity of constraints. The following templates illustrate conventional phrasing patterns.

Purpose Hedging Phrase Template
Introducing a limitation One limitation of this study concerns the…
Acknowledging a design constraint Due to the cross-sectional nature of this design, it was not possible to…
Qualifying generalizability The findings may not be generalizable to populations beyond…
Noting sample limitations The relatively small sample size may have reduced the statistical power to detect…
Addressing self-report bias As with all self-reported measures, the data may be subject to recall bias and…
Acknowledging access restrictions Access to [data source or population] was restricted, which limited the scope of…
Signaling temporal constraints Because data were collected during [specific period], the results may not reflect…
Pointing to future research Future studies should consider employing a longitudinal design to…
Mitigating reviewer concern While this limitation may affect the precision of estimates, it is unlikely to alter the direction of the main findings because…

How Can Limitations Be Turned into Future Research Directions?

Every limitation is, in effect, a recommendation for future research. Reframing constraints as forward-looking suggestions is one of the most productive things a limitations section can do for the scientific community.

Limitation Type Suggested Future Research Direction
Small or non-probability sample Replicate with a larger, randomly selected, or nationally representative sample.
Cross-sectional design Conduct a longitudinal study tracking the same participants over 12 to 36 months.
Single geographic location Use a multi-site design spanning at least three regions or countries.
Self-reported data only Triangulate self-report data with objective measures, administrative records, or observer ratings.
Narrow age or demographic focus Extend the study to include additional age groups, genders, or cultural communities.
Limited access to a population Establish formal research partnerships with the relevant organizations or agencies to enable future access.
Ethical constraints on measurement Develop validated proxy measures or less intrusive instruments that meet ethical approval requirements.
Single time point collection Introduce pre-test, mid-point, and post-test measurement at minimum three intervals.

How Long Should the Limitations Section Be?

For a dissertation or thesis, a limitations section of 200 to 500 words is generally appropriate. It should represent one section of the Conclusions chapter rather than a comprehensive critical review of everything that could have gone wrong. Journal articles typically allocate fewer words, with 100 to 300 words common in high-volume empirical journals. The key principle is proportionality: each limitation described should be proportionate to the impact it actually had on the study.

Document Type Recommended Length Recommended Depth
Undergraduate dissertation 150 to 300 words Identify two to three limitations with brief explanations.
Masters dissertation 250 to 500 words Identify three to four limitations with justification and future directions.
Doctoral dissertation 400 to 800 words Address all major limitations with full reflection and actionable future research suggestions.
Journal article 100 to 300 words Focus on the one or two limitations most likely to concern reviewers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between limitations and delimitations, and where do each go in a paper?

Limitations are constraints that were outside your control during the study, such as a restricted sample, unreliable instruments, or limited access to data. Delimitations are intentional scope decisions you made before the study began, such as focusing on one age group or geographic region. Limitations belong in the discussion section of Chapter 3 or 4. Delimitations are stated in Chapter 1, alongside your research aims and questions.

Will acknowledging limitations hurt my chances of publication?

No. Reviewers and editors respond more favorably to authors who identify and discuss limitations than to those who omit them. A paper without any acknowledged limitations is often viewed with suspicion. The risk is not in admitting weaknesses: the risk is in reviewers discovering limitations you failed to mention, which damages credibility more than disclosure ever would.

Should I include every possible limitation in my paper?

No. Focus only on the limitations that had the greatest potential impact on the quality of your findings and your ability to answer your research questions. Listing every conceivable weakness dilutes the discussion and signals poor editorial judgment. Two to four well-developed limitations are more persuasive than a long but shallow list.

Do qualitative studies have different types of limitations than quantitative ones?

Yes, though there is overlap. Qualitative studies frequently face limitations related to transferability rather than statistical generalizability, subjectivity in coding and interpretation, small purposive samples, and researcher positionality. Quantitative studies are more likely to encounter limitations related to sample size, instrument validity, control group absence, and statistical power. Mixed-methods studies must address limitations from both traditions.

Can I mention a limitation in my methods section instead of the discussion?

You can and sometimes should acknowledge a limitation briefly within the methods section if it is directly relevant to a specific procedural decision. However, that mention does not substitute for a consolidated limitations section. Any limitation raised in the methods section must be restated in the limitations section so that readers have a complete and clearly organized account of all constraints in one place.

Is it acceptable to say my study has no significant limitations?

No. Every research study has limitations of some kind, regardless of how rigorously it was conducted. Claiming that a study has no significant limitations is not credible and is likely to raise red flags with reviewers. If you genuinely believe your constraints were minor, acknowledge them as such but still name them clearly and explain why they did not materially affect the findings.

My supervisor says my limitations section is too negative. What should I do?

Balance each limitation with a forward-looking statement that transforms the constraint into a productive suggestion for future research. Avoid language that characterizes the limitations as fatal flaws. Instead, use hedging language such as ‘may have affected’ rather than ‘invalidates’ and follow each constraint with a concrete recommendation for how it can be addressed in subsequent studies. This framing is constructive rather than defeatist.

Can limitations become the basis of a future research proposal?

Yes, and this is one of the most valuable functions of a well-written limitations section. The constraints you could not resolve become the rationale for future grant applications, research proposals, and study designs. A clear limitations section explains why additional research is needed, defines the gap to be filled, and signals to funding bodies and academic departments that a coherent research agenda exists. Many published follow-up studies begin precisely where the limitations section of a prior study ends.

Safety rules in labs: 8 Best practices for students and researchers

Are you aware of the essential lab safety rules for students? If not, you’re not alone. While working in a laboratory can be an exhilarating experience, especially for students, it also exposes them to potential dangers. It is crucial for students to adhere to all laboratory rules for students and safety guidelines. Regrettably, despite advancements in scientific understanding, students are often the least likely to assess risks in the lab.

According to a study published in Nature,1 27% of researchers, including students, surveyed admitted to never conducting any risk assessment before performing laboratory work, and only 40% reported consistently wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during lab work.

Even more concerning is that 25%-38% of lab personnel, including students, surveyed had experienced accidents or injuries in the lab, but these incidents were not reported to their supervisors or principal investigators. These results underscore the urgent need to ensure strict adherence to lab safety rules for students and safety precautions.

Top safety rules in labs every researcher should follow

Accidents in the lab, regardless of seeming minor, can result in severe injury, damage to equipment, or even death. It is crucial for students to observe safety rules in a lab to avoid accidents. Here are some best practices and laboratory rules for students that students must observe while working in a science lab:

1. Wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)

One of the most basic safety rules in a lab is dressing appropriately from head to toe. Students are advised to wear non-fussy clothes and avoid flowing outfits that could impede their movement. It’s crucial to tie back or secure long hair and choose covered shoes over impractical ones. To avoid the risk of severe injury, students should wear appropriate PPE, including lab coats, gloves, safety goggles, face masks, and hearing protection, depending on the type of experiments being conducted.

2. Familiarize yourself with the lab’s emergency procedures

Students must be aware of specific safety rules in a lab and strict emergency procedures to follow in case of an accident. It is crucial to familiarize themselves with these procedures and know the location of fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, and emergency exits. Students must also know whom to contact in case of an emergency and how to report an accident. Familiarity with laboratory rules for students and safety precautions can prevent a small issue from turning into a larger problem.

3. Know your symbols and label all hazardous materials

As part of the safety rules in a lab, students need to know common hazard symbols and what each of them means. All hazardous materials in the lab must be appropriately labeled to avoid confusion or accidents. Labels should indicate not just the contents of the container but also the date the material was prepared and whether they pose potential hazards. Additionally, students must know how to handle and dispose of hazardous materials safely.

4. Keep the lab organized and clean

A cluttered and messy lab can increase the risk of accidents. One of the important safety rules in a lab is keeping the entire place organized and clean by regularly disposing of waste materials and storing equipment properly. Walkways and exits must be kept clear at all times to ensure easy access and exits in case of an emergency. Also, students should never bring food or drinks into the lab, as they could become contaminated or spill, tainting an experiment.

5. Follow protocol when handling hazardous materials

Researchers must follow established safety rules in a lab when handling hazardous materials, including chemicals, biological agents, and radioactive materials. Proper training is essential when working in a lab, especially knowing the laboratory rules for students and safety precautions. Students must be aware of the standard protocols to operate key equipment, handle materials with care, and store them properly. They must also be aware of the potential hazards and risks associated with the materials they work with and what to do if anything goes wrong.

6. Avoid unnecessary distractions

Labs are a minefield of accidents waiting to happen for students who are not focused. Distractions often lead to accidents in the lab, so students should remain focused on the task at hand, avoid rushing, or taking shortcuts that can compromise their safety. It’s also important to avoid using phones or engaging in unrelated conversations while conducting experiments.

7. Follow proper procedures for experiments

Always know the safety rules in a lab and carefully follow proper procedures when conducting any experiment or using lab equipment. Follow the best practices for disposing of chemicals, biological samples, and other hazardous waste. Be aware of your experience and capabilities and do not attempt to conduct experiments or handle materials beyond your expertise or training. Seek guidance or help from supervisors when handling new or hazardous materials.

8. Report any accidents or near misses

If there are any accidents or near misses in the lab, students must immediately report this to their supervisors or safety officers. Reporting such incidents can help identify hazards and improve safety rules in the lab to prevent future accidents. Students must also receive appropriate training on emergency evacuation strategies, and regular simulations and drills must be conducted to ensure they can act quickly and efficiently in a time of need.

Finally, researchers are responsible for ensuring their own safety in a lab and the safety of their fellow students and colleagues when working in a lab. Laboratory accidents can result in lost time, damage to equipment or people, and even legal liabilities. Additionally, accidents can damage the reputation of the institution or company conducting the research. Therefore, it is critical that students be aware of lab safety rules and follow them without exception.

Using digital tools for researchers effectively can be the difference between an average and an excellent piece of research. But today, with the long list of research tools available online, it is only natural for busy researchers to be baffled when it comes to making the right choice for specific needs. With considerations of time, cost, effectiveness and quality, there is a lot to check before you make the choice. We don’t want you to spend hours just looking for the best tools for researchers, so we’ve rounded up some of the most effective digital tools for researchers to make your life simpler.

In this comprehensive article, we have compiled a list of 16 useful online tools for researchers at various stages of the research journey. These tools will streamline your research process, help you stay organized, and provide you with easy access to the information you need. From reference management software to digital libraries, these cutting-edge tools cater to the needs of both experienced and novice researchers alike. Whether you’re working on a major research project or just starting out, this blog will help you get ahead of the curve and make your research journey a tad (we aren’t making big promises) bit easier.

Why are digital tools for researchers important

Before any digital tools for researchers were introduced, academics had to rely on old-school manual methods that were typically time-consuming, labor-intensive, and also limited in scope. For instance, you had to subscribe to journals or physically visit libraries and spend hours searching and sifting through tomes before finding the most relevant information. And once that was done, the process of organizing, storing, and referencing data was another challenge you had to overcome.

In contrast, online tools for researchers offer a wealth of information and resources at your fingertips today. With the option to search and access vast amounts of knowledge with a few clicks, researchers are able to boost their efficiency and effectiveness at work.

And it’s not just limited to online tools for researchers that allow you to easily store, organize, and manage information, there are a number of tools that can help you hone your writing, check for plagiarism, find the right journal, collaborate with other researchers, and share your knowledge, ideas, and resources. The rapid development of digital tools for researchers have revolutionized the way researchers work, making way for faster innovation and more groundbreaking research.

Types of tools for researchers

There are various types of online tools for researchers to choose from. These tools can be classified into various categories such as planning and management of research projects, literature search, data collection and analysis, reference management, editing and paraphrasing, and collaboration and communication. Academic Search Engines

As researchers you are expected to keep up with the latest developments in your own and related research fields. Yet, with the exponential growth in research output, this is far from easy. This is what makes academic search engines invaluable to academics searching for relevant scientific information. They use keywords to help researchers find, access and read about the latest most relevant research, including peer-reviewed articles, genuine information, author home pages, and university websites.

Google Scholar, R Discovery, and Scopus are our top tools for researchers in this category.

R Discovery

R Discovery is a strong contender when it comes to the best literature search and reading tools for researchers. An AI-powered app for researchers, R Discovery boasts of an expanding library of research content that includes over 100 million research papers across 9.5 million topics and more than 32,000 journals worldwide. It uses your topics of interest to create a personalized reading feed, with suggestions on top reads, smart summaries, and other features to help you discover the right research in minutes.

This includes open access articles, preprints, and pay-walled content (accessible through institutional credentials) across all major subject areas, including biology, medicine, philosophy, political science, environmental science, social sciences, and psychology. The best part is that this app for researchers continually upgrades its features and eliminated predatory journals to ensure you have access to reliable research that works for you.

R Discovery is one of the many tools for researchers developed by Researcher.Life and is completely free to install and use. It is available on both mobile and web, allowing for streamlined reading on your preferred device.

Google Scholar

If you’re an academic, you probably have used Google Scholar sometime in your research journey. It is one of the most used tools for researchers and acts as an online search engine for academics looking for scholarly literature and relevant sources to cite. It is tailored for academics, which means you can use different keywords to look up various research articles, theses, books, and conference papers to support your research study.

Researchers can also search for authors, journals, and other titles and can even create an account to save their search results. The one drawback here though is that you will need to keep searching until you find related research, and even then you will still need to browse through these individually to find the most relevant content for your research topic.

Scopus

Another popular academic search tool for researchers is Scopus, an offering by Elsevier that is very similar to Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic. The largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed research with over 1.7 billion cited references, Scopus houses content indexed from more than 25,000 active titles and 7,000 publishers, all carefully vetted and selected by an independent review board.

With Scopus, you can look for articles, journals, and any other sources that will help you write better research. You can also refine your literature search by filtering for author name or affiliation among others. Scopus also has analytical tools to help you visualize and compare research data – that is, you can view author, journal, and article impact metrics through the detailed research output and trends reports that Scopus provides.

Scopus works as an API that can be integrated into an institution’s repository or research information management systems. While it is free to use for non-subscribers, there is limited access to content with additional costs to access paywalled articles on this platform.

Top 16 digital tools that every researcher should know about

Journal Selection Tools

Given the enormous number of scholarly journals around and new ones coming up every year, it can be hard to select the best journal for your research paper. Despite its challenges, the process of finding the perfect journal, which is respected, relevant, and reliable, is one of the most critical tasks to get right for researchers. This is why good online journal finders are invaluable tools for researchers.

Elsevier’s Journal Finder tool and the Global Journal Database (GJD) are two pretty effective journal selection tools for researchers.

Journal Finder

The Journal Finder tool by Elsevier, one of the largest publishers of peer-reviewed journals across disciplines, is a great solution for authors looking to shortlist journals for their work. Just use relevant keywords, titles, or your research paper abstract to get a list of recommended Elsevier journals that publish research similar to yours.

Its intelligent machine learning algorithm uses terms specific to the corresponding research field to generate the best matches for your article. You can choose from the top of the list or sort this further using filters based on your preferences. The Journal Finder also lists journals with open-access publishing options and those that cover multidisciplinary research fields.

Elsevier can be used for free to search for journals related to your research.

Global Journal Database

The Global Journal Database, developed by Researcher.Life, comprises of more than 43,000 journals indexed in reputed public directories like Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Scopus, and Web of Science. Researchers can search for relevant journals using the title or ISSN, similar topics, research paper abstracts, and even manuscripts; the advanced AI engine will use this to generate the best journals for you.

Each journal recommendation comes with a detailed journal report that has key information about shortlisted journals, including publisher details, journal metrics, author instructions, the editorial review process, and even a list of the latest articles published. With the Global Journal Database, you can see where your preferred journal is indexed and browse its publishing history to better understand its scope. The broad journal coverage, multiple search modes, and detailed journal reports make this an exceptional tool for researchers, simplifying and speeding up the often-daunting journal selection process.

The Global Journal Database is available free with a Researcher.Life Essentials Pack subscription.

In March, we continued making enhancements to the search function to make search more user friendly and intuitive at R Discovery. We also launched a widget for both Android and iOS systems so you get to read the latest published papers as early as possible. Read on to know more!

Topic suggestions based on your search query and other improvements

When you search for a string of text on R Discovery, the tool understands the topics you might be looking for and offers relevant topic suggestions. You can choose from these topics or look for other topics and see how each action changes your search results.

Moreover, the Journal filter above your search results now allows you to select multiple journals instead of just one.

Try out the enhanced search now!

New onboarding options – paper titles and search strings

If stumped by the range of topics to choose from, new users of the app can sidestep the topic selection process during onboarding and choose paper titles instead. R Discovery will extract relevant topics from these papers and allow the user to vet the topics before creating their personalized feed.

In case none of the onboarding options work for the user (choosing topics, journals, or paper titles), they can enter their search query and the tool will extract and suggest topics from the search string.

Get updated on the latest research with the R Discovery widget!

Stay updated on your topics by adding the R Discovery widget to your screen. Here’s how.

For Android devices, you can touch and hold an open space on your device’s home screen until the widget icon appears at the bottom of the screen. Click on the icon and browse through the widgets until you come upon Discovery. Drag and drop the widget on your device’s home screen.

For iOS devices, you can touch and hold an open space on your phone’s home screen until the apps begin to jiggle and the + sign appears at the upper left corner. Click on + and browse through the widgets until you find Discovery and add the widget.

If you haven’t yet updated to the latest version of the R Discovery app, please do so now to get access to the latest features.

We would love to hear your feedback and any suggestions on what you’d like for us to work on. Do let us know what you think of the latest updates from R Discovery! You can either write to us if you have any ideas to share, or choose your preferred slot to talk to us.

And do check out the Researcher.Life Ambassador program – it’s a great opportunity for researchers to empower themselves and their academic communities with advanced tools and services from Researcher.Life. The Researcher.Life Ambassador Program is a global community of researchers who wish to give back to their academic communities through mentoring and collaboration with other researchers. Researcher.Life Ambassadors empower themselves and their fellow researchers with advanced tools and services from Researcher.Life that help them do more, be more, and succeed more. Every month we spotlight one Ambassador who has gone the extra mile in supporting their academic community.

Ambassador of the Month: Nour Benlakhdar

Nour Benlakhdar is a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Linguistics, University of Northampton. Originally from Algeria, she is now in the third year of her Ph.D. program in the U.K. Her research focuses on the difficulties Algerian PhD students face when writing for publication.

How did you get interested in this field?

My research stems from my personal experiences with science Ph.D. students and my observation of their struggles throughout the process of drafting academic articles. As I grew up in a family of intellectually-curious people, I became strongly interested in research – including how to do research – and academic life. I quickly realized that education sits at the heart of any kind of development. My field, Educational Linguistics, combines every passion I have in this sense.

Why did you decide to become a Researcher.Life Ambassador?

Researcher.Life Ambassador is one of the programs which facilitates researchers’ interactions with one another and encourages interdisciplinary collaborations. More than that, I joined this program because I wish to give back as much as possible to the academic community as a Researcher.Life Ambassador offers all types of support to do so.

What is the best part about working in research?

I find research to be rewarding. In the social sciences, research combines theory and practice and being able to touch upon practical issues promises a new step towards enhancing current situations.

And the most challenging part about working in research?

I believe that doing research is time and effort consuming especially when things don’t go as planned – but it is part of research and we should embrace it.

What is the one thing you want people to know about Researcher.Life?

There is a lot to say about Researcher.Life, but if you’re a researcher at any stage in your journey, joining this community will help you broaden your support bubble, build sustainable relationships and stay up-to-date with the latest discussions in all fields.

How has Researcher.Life Ambassador Program helped you in empowering the research community?

I have always wanted to help as many Ph.D. students as possible by sharing organization tips I have developed since the start of my journey. The team of the Researcher Life Ambassador program is supportive and has helped me prepare for my first Facebook live ‘Laying the foundation to Ph.D. success.’ It is amazing how the team works very hard and encourages its ambassadors to do more!

There’s something about the start of a new year that always makes us reflect on the year that has been. 2021 was an interesting year – the world began opening up despite the pandemic and this brought with it, its own set of challenges.

From universities and labs opening up to remote work becoming status quo – different parts of the world defined a new normal. Keeping this in mind, R Discovery aimed to bring to you the best research at your fingertips from the comfort of your own home. We reflect back on the reading habits you built ( and didn’t 😉 ) in 2021.

  • Based on your research reading what kind of researcher you were in 2021.
Every research journey is different. Some researchers narrow down to one topic and spend months reading and thinking about it, only to write an entire paper out in a few weeks. Others like to read and write simultaneously over the months, exploring different topics and understanding how different science might help further their writing. Based on this we found that most researchers fell into one of three categories
    • Focused: Researchers who read only a few topics repeatedly.
    • Versatile: Researchers who mostly focused on a few topics, but also looked at related topics to help further their research.
    • Explorers: These researchers enjoyed reading on a wide variety of topics. Like the person who read up on Algerian Cinema, Mental Health, Osteoporosis and Shakespeare!
  • Research reading is a habit that helps researchers stay on top of the latest in their field. R Discovery aims to help in the building of that habit. Keeping that in mind, we wanted to share the total number of papers you read in the year. If you’d like to increase this number, you can always switch on notifications that provide the daily top 3 papers most relevant based on your reading patterns. Read more without searching for it.
  • Of all the topics you covered, we wanted to share the one that was most viewed on R Discovery by you. Remember: R Discovery is different for every researcher.

  • We also included your overall activity – how many times you liked or Bookmarked or shared an article. These actions help the recommendation improve, but more importantly they let us know that you are liking the app. And we are grateful for your constant feedback.
  • As a Thank You, we added a card with the new R Discovery Amplify feature. R Discovery Amplify is a feature that understands how to increase the scope of your research while staying relevant. It suggests topics that are relevant to you but may not be covered by the topics you are actively following them.

R Discovery is nothing without you, the researcher who logs in daily to find, peruse and read the latest research. And in 2021, we were able to reach half a million of you. Our hearts are filled with gratitude as we take these first steps in to 2022.

We wish you a happy new year! Hope 2022 is filled with good health, high spirits and lots of kickass relevant research! Cheers!

Ambassador of the Month: Dr. Suman Mundkur

Dr. Suman Mundkur is a Researcher.Life Ambassador, Research Consultant and Founder of Academic Research Consultancy Services. Last year, she retired as Associate Professor, Textiles and Apparel Designing, SNDT Women’s University after 29 years of teaching and research. She holds a PhD in Home Science from the Department of Textiles and Fashion Technology, Nirmala Niketan, Mumbai University. Dr. Mundkur published her first book earlier this year.

Could you tell us a little about your research?

Being a professor from the Home Science field, my specialization was in Textiles and Apparel Designing. For 29 years I taught how textiles are made: the processing of fabrics, coloration, designing, production; merchandising, and marketing of apparel. But the heart of my research was managing clothing waste – what happens to the clothes and what can be done to reuse and recycle for sustainable consumption. “Sourcing and Reuse of Post-consumer Clothing Waste for Technical Textile Products” was the title of my Ph.D. Research. It lead me to understand the current practices in the disposal and reuse in Indian households, the products that are made to advance the life of the clothes, and the possible products that can be designed, developed and accessed for consumer acceptance and sale.

Discarded clothes collected through a unique door-to-door collection system in India through communities or recyclers called ‘Bhandivale’ opened up new insights that were much appreciated when presented at International Conferences in India and abroad. Tracing the journey of pre-owned clothes from homes from different nations, to clarify the ‘Rag Route’ was a revelation of how India had turned into a ‘recycling hub’ over the decades since Independence. Research in the level of support from the government, non-government organizations and various stakeholders in the trade of ‘second-hand clothes’ and ‘rags’ led to studying what happens at the grassroots level. Thousands of people employed for a livelihood in collecting, sorting, wasting, mending, dyeing, ironing, etc. to make it ready for resale. Traditionally values of ‘Vastra-daan’ or donation of clothes being imbibed in Indian culture, during the course of research, it was rarely seen that clothes go into the trash. Whether it was during natural calamities or otherwise, clothes are passed on to those in need, those who will accept, and those who will rent or resell. Technical textiles is a field of textile application other than Apparel and Home Textiles. Development of technical textile nonwoven materials for sound absorption, thermal insulation, and packaging was the outcome of the Ph.D. research.

How did you get interested in this field?

As the third child in the family, I grew up accepting hand-me-downs with pleasure. In adulthood, it was curiosity that led me to research this topic of recycling textiles, in particular clothing.

What are you currently working on now?

I am currently working on hand-made paper made from post-consumer clothing waste of cotton origin. My other ongoing projects are on ‘Plus Size Fashion’; ‘Natural Dyes on Wool’; ‘Impact of Social Media on Shopping behavior‘ and ‘Visual Research’.

Why did you decide to become a Researcher.Life Ambassador?

Being an Associate Professor, I had seen the struggles of my students as first-time researchers. Being a late-career researcher myself, I had faced challenges that I did not want others to face. I wanted to help other researchers by guiding, helping and motivating them.

What is the best part about working in research?

The ability to work with researchers from various disciplines that helps keep me updated on other subjects. It keeps the mind in a lifelong learning-mode!

And the most challenging part about working in research?

It needs time, concentration, and dedication. It is difficult to focus on many other aspects of life.

What is the one thing you want people to know about Researcher.Life?

You are supported well. You know where to look for help.

How has Researcher.Life Ambassador Program helped you in empowering the research community?

As a Researcher.Life Ambassador, I have been able to connect with other researchers, understand the problems faced by the young researchers in various disciplines. R Voice has helped me understand these aspects better. The events that I have participated and conducted have given me a sense of belonging to the CACTUS family. Interaction with the CEO was an encouraging and motivating experience. It not only oriented us to the company and its vision and mission, but it also gave us the direction to join hands and move ahead with other like-minded researchers. Zeroing In On A Research Topic: Resources and Strategies of Selecting, Narrowing down – A Guide for First-time Researchers was the first book I wrote and launched on 19th July 2021. In Chapter 4, the Resources section gave a detailed account of the Researcher.Life eco-system that will help kick-start research at any stage in the academic hierarchy. I could reach out to over 1000 attendees orienting them on Researcher.Life products on Facebook Live for a session on ‘How to Write a Review Paper: A Guide for Ph.D Scholars’. Partnering with another Researcher.Life Ambassador, I could conduct a panel discussion on “Ethical Guidelines in Research and Publishing” along with an eminent panel of experts from various fields. An interview with the Researcher.Life Team gave me an opportunity to express how I benefited from being a Researcher.Life Ambassador and how Researcher.Life can benefit from me. It’s a sure win-win! Networking with other Researcher.Life Ambassadors has been helping widen my horizon. Researcher.Life has given me a position and status that I feel responsible for.

How to Select a Relevant Literature Search Tool: 5 Key Considerations https://researcher.life/blog/article/selecting-literature-search-tool/ Wed, 22 Dec 2021 13:57:26 +0000 https://researcher.life/blog/?p=1403 One often hears the proverb, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ For researchers, this journey starts with selecting relevant literature.

The post How to Select a Relevant Literature Search Tool: 5 Key Considerations appeared first on .

]]>

One often hears the proverb, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ For researchers, this journey starts with selecting relevant literature. A systematic literature search is a crucial step for researchers to map the objective of their study and plan their research. However, browsing through hundreds of published articles to keep up with new, relevant developments in their field is time-consuming and often daunting. Is there a way to simplify this process? YES!

Today, if you find yourself wondering how to select relevant literature, know that there are several literature search tools online to help you improve and streamline your search for relevant articles. But with so many options, how can you ensure you’ve picked the right one? Here are five questions you should ask yourself when selecting a literature search tool that will work for you.

1. Does it help you to find the latest, most relevant literature?

The most challenging task for researchers is being able to cut through the clutter and ensure they are selecting relevant literature in their field. The increasing volume of publications each year only adds to this problem. In fact, an Elsevier and Sense about Science report revealed that while researchers spent about 9 hours a week searching and reading for literature, they only found half of what they read useful.

When conducting a systematic literature search, a simple online search is unlikely to throw up accurate or relevant results unless the search engine is optimized for researchers. So the first question to ask yourself is, does your literature search tool sift through the existing work in your field and present you with the latest, most relevant research articles?

Look for a smart literature search tool that presents you with personalized reading recommendations based on your preferred research interests and helps you in selecting relevant literature reads from related subject areas. You should also be able to fine-tune your search by filtering the results by author name, publish date and journal title. These features offer you an added advantage when it comes to keeping up with research that matters, and can cut down the time you spend just looking for the right articles.

2. Does it include article abstracts to help optimize your reading?

Abstracts showcase the essence of a research paper, highlighting the key points in a structured manner that makes it easy to read and understand. This is why time-strapped researchers often rely on abstracts for a systematic literature search; it helps them sift through a sea of published articles and decide whether a paper is worth reading further. This makes the presence of article abstracts an important consideration when choosing a literature search tool as it allows you in reducing the time spent selecting relevant literature.

Once you identify a paper that has methodologies, measurements, technical data, or even a study design that is relevant for your research, you should be able to access it seamlessly. While many literature search tools allow you to read open access papers, they do not allow you to unlock articles behind paywalls, making the process of selecting relevant literature difficult. For an efficient and systematic literature search, pick a good literature search tool, which offers users the option to use their university or institutional credentials to unlock full text of pay-walled articles, ensuring a more seamless reading experience.

3. Does it allow you to create your own personalized library?

Researchers are advised to organize relevant reads in a way that ensures articles are discoverable and ready to refer to in the future. But for academics who write notes on a notepad in a library or add links to a Word document while selecting relevant literature online, the process of quickly collating and selecting relevant literature can be a challenge. Many struggle to remember small, yet significant, details or spend hours retracing their steps to find a paper several days or months after the initial search.

So, when you find yourself thinking, how to select relevant literature, look for a literature search tool that not only recommends new reading recommendations, but also allows you to create a personalized reading library. Check if there is a simple way to bookmark articles and keep a track of literature you’ve read so that you don’t miss out on crucial research. These features can help you with a systematic literature search and make research reading a happier experience.

4. Does it offer you access to a continually updated database?

A comprehensive literature search is often taken to mean search everywhere you can. While conducting a systematic literature search, most researchers sift through various repositories and databases to find the latest and most relevant articles. This doesn’t have to be your reality. With the right scientific literature search tool, selecting relevant literature can be easy. You can find everything you need in one place instead of scouring multiple websites and research platforms.

When picking a literature search tool, be sure to check if it covers all the key article databases in your field of research. In fact, an ideal literature search tool should come with a large, continually updated repository of scholarly articles to ensure you have access to the key developments from reputed international journals.

5. Does it ensure you stay updated with notifications on the latest articles?

A systematic literature search to keep up with the latest scholarly articles and developments is a crucial skill for researchers, one that can be developed by making reading a daily habit. Slipping up here can mean missing out on key information that has the potential to enhance your research.

For busy researchers juggling multiple roles, selecting relevant literature is a time-consuming task that is often relegated to the last item on their to-do lists. Here, scientific literature search tools can help you kick-start and maintain your daily reading schedule. So look for a smart literature search tool that not only recommends relevant reads (and thereby helps you in selecting relevant literature) but also alerts you about new developments with timely updates on new publications.

Ambassador of the Month: Yuji Higashide

Yuji Higashide is a Researcher, Lecturer, and Trainer currently working with the Medical Innovation and Nursing Diversification: Research, Education and Training Alliance in Tokyo. He has a Master’s in Medical Administration and a Doctorate in Public Health Research Development from Tokyo Medical and Dental University. He is a part of CACTUS’s global pool of trainers.

Could you tell us a little about your research?

My current research is to clarify the ambiguity of the definition of nursing management by Text Mining using AI. The other is to improve the efficiency of management that integrates medical care and dentistry at regional medical institutions.

How did you get interested in this field?

Human illnesses do not occur independently in the medical and dental fields, but both may be related. However, since the medical and dentistry departments have established medical treatment systems independently, they tend to be left unrelated. Therefore, we are examining what kind of medical care system can contribute to improving the health of local residents and the profitability of medical institutions.

What are you currently working on now?

Improving management efficiency at regional medical institutions

Why did you decide to become a Researcher.Life Ambassador?

Not only is research in graduate school very lonely, but it is also difficult to receive support from those around us. I would like to pass on a better research environment to the younger generation by sharing my hardships as much as possible.

What is the best part about working in research?

The results of my research make it clear that I wonder why this is happening. And, as a result, we can make some contribution to society.

And the most challenging part about working in research?

It is very difficult to focus on research in the area of my interest. More than that, the ability to develop an accurate research plan will determine whether the research will succeed before it begins. In that sense, I feel that the research plan is the most difficult for me.

What is the one thing you want people to know about Researcher.Life?

Research is not done alone. Through Researcher.Life, you can share your worries with researchers who have the same worries as you and grow with each other.

How has Researcher.Life Ambassador Program helped you in empowering the research community?

This program is very informative and is still growing. I advise researchers to make the program easier to use to help researchers with more efficient research.

Mendeley is a free reference management app that automatically generates bibliographies as you write. You don’t need to manually type references; Mendeley imports and organizes them in a systematic manner. The app for researchers allows you to insert citations and create reference lists in different journal formats rapidly and seamlessly. These features free up lot of time, which can be used to focus on paper or thesis writing.

Mendeley is available in both mobile and desktop formats, and researchers can conveniently read content on the go and even highlight text that they might want to return to. Researchers can export papers from the R Discovery app to Mendeley and Zotero. Once exported, they can find these papers in their libraries on ref managers. They can also connect their Mendeley and Zotero accounts with R Discovery (when they are setting up preferences on R Discovery). This will allow for this smart app for researchers to suggest topics based on the Mendeley or Zotero reading list.

Key features

    • Helps annotate and organize documents
    • Can be used across platforms seamlessly
    • Integrates with literature discovery apps for researchers like R Discovery.
  1. Calm: Prevent burnout and focus on self-care

Researchers work for long hours, juggling multiple research tasks, securing funding, and dealing with stressors like dealing with harsh peer reviewer comments and article rejection. These factors can add up and affect a researcher’s mental well-being and motivation. Some indicators can point to one’s need to focus on self-care, such as altered sleep patterns. A stressed researcher will constantly feel tired and be less efficient at work.

Calm is a popular app for researchers looking to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and aid in relaxation and self-improvement. The app provides sessions for guided meditation and breathing and masterclasses for managing stress, enhancing creativity, and much more. The use of such apps can even improve concentration and mindfulness. This is a great app for researchers to use to remain calm in the face of high work pressure, roadblocks in your experiments, and creative blocks when writing papers. A few minutes a day on such an app can help you break negative patterns. After all, a happy researcher is a productive researcher!

Key features

    • Tracks a user’s basic statistics, e.g., minutes of meditation
    • Sends meditation reminders
    • Offers masterclasses taught by experts in the field of wellness.

Don’t worry, be “appy”!

Technological innovations like AI are constantly improving apps in terms of functions and user experience. While some apps for researchers help to ease the workload or aid in multitasking, others help in self-improvement and time management to let researchers focus better on core tasks. When possible, one should use some of these best apps for researchers to become savvier and more efficient, getting the most out of their time and effort.

Here are some exciting updates from R Discovery in October that will improve your reading experience.

Read relevant research – without any interruptions

New Explore screen
New Home Screen

Your app’s interface has been redesigned to help you read more of what matters to you.

The home page now shows you an unbroken stream of best matches from your topics! As you scroll down your feed, you will see relevant details about each article to help you decide whether you should read it right away, save it for later, or provide feedback to the algorithm to show you more (or fewer) such articles.

Your old home page with its tangential recommendations, full-text reads, latest articles from your selected journals, search history is still available on the “Explore” screen, accessible from the bottom navigation bar.

The bottom navigation bar appears consistently on the app, helping you navigate with ease so you can reach important screens with just one click.

Learn how to access the app’s new features in seconds

Your app wears a new look! We’ve introduced coach marks to call your attention to the new features and their benefits. Do spare a few seconds and complete the tour.

But first, update your app to the latest version!

Find related topics with ease when onboarding

To assist new users as they select their topics while onboarding, the app now recommends other topics that are closely related to the ones they have selected. This makes their search easier and helps ensure they don’t miss any topics that might interest them.

If you have an account on R Discovery but are still to select your topics, give this a try 😊

We reached out to a few researchers who’ve been associated with us and asked them what helped them succeed and what can help them further. This got us some interesting views about the catalysts and potholes in an author’s journey, some of which you may relate to. This is the second in a two-part series featuring interviews with researchers; click here to read the first post.

Yuji Higashide, Japan

Master of Medical Administration
Medical Management and Public Health

The path to success in my career is a strong will to complete my research and the environment around me that supports and advises me.

What has helped you achieve success and growth in your career?

The path to success in my career is straightforward, and I think it’s my strong will to complete my research and the environment around me that supports and advises me.

What are aspects of your work that can be simplified, so that you have more time to focus on your research?

Perhaps many researchers already have data at each stage of manuscript writing. To write a manuscript, you have to perform statistical processing using that data. And at the time of statistical analysis, we often cannot judge whether the statistical method we are thinking of is correct. So we need to consult a statistician. As a result, you may have to redo the statistical processing. It is beneficial for us to be able to reduce this gap.

Weiwei Jiang, China

Assistant Professor, Tsinghua University
Computer Science

A great research team with both excellent supervisor and students has helped me in my career.

What has helped you achieve success and growth in your career?

A great research team with both excellent supervisor and students; a high-level platform providing enough research funding; the support from my family

What are aspects of your work that can be simplified, so that you have more time to focus on your research?

Literature search & recommendation; English proofreading; Latex & Word formatting

Karen Hall, Guyana

Graduate Research Fellow, University Rovira
Social Anthropology and Communication

I use a calendar and alarm reminders to assist me to keep my deadlines. Another strategy I consciously practice is not having an overambitious plan.

What has helped you achieve success and growth in your career?

I read a few self-motivation books early on in life, notably “Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” and “The Power of Positive Thinking.” These books taught me to look beyond my present circumstances and not only plan my work but track it too. One work ethic I came into my PhD program with is time management. I use a calendar and alarm reminders to assist me to keep my deadlines. Another strategy I consciously practice is not having an overambitious plan – rather, I break up my work into smaller units and keep revisiting my goals from time to time.

What are aspects of your work that can be simplified, so that you have more time to focus on your research?

One of my frustrations is the lack of appropriate training to understand how to write academic articles – the university provides superficial guidance in the form of short courses and workshops, but this doesn’t really help. What we probably need as PhD students are coaches to provide continued guidance and support on academic writing and publication. Another problem that we researchers often face is a generation gap with older supervisors. They are not really open to modern-day innovations, which leads to conflict. I want them to honor the way I want to do research and to be more open to innovations as it makes achieving academic goals smoother and less stressful.

Each researcher’s path to success is unique, and the support needed by each depends on which discipline they belong to, which career stage they’re at, what their career goals are, and which skills they have (or lack). Some may need tools that increase their productivity, some may need to learn new skills, and some may need to connect with other researchers or individuals who can help them advance in their careers.

The challenge most of them face is that it takes time to find these resources, most of which cannot be accessed in one place. What if, instead of ping-ponging between multiple platforms that serve individual needs, researchers found everything they need in a single location? What if someone focused on addressing this need for a one-stop shop so that researchers could focus on more important things? This is the principle underlying Researcher.Life—an integrated ecosystem developed after listening to the views of many researchers like those featured in this series. Whether researchers need a tool for smart literature discovery, publication support for their manuscripts, courses to help learn new skills, or simply a community of peers to connect with, Researcher.Life allows them seamless access to all of these and more. Researchers find purpose and meaning in their work in different ways, and what they define as success can vary. They may see success as having a good publication record, getting a desired promotion, winning a prestigious award, creating positive social impact, or perhaps a combination of all of these. Each of these is a challenging goal, needing researchers to adopt unique strategies and depend on specific resources or support.

So, what helps them achieve their goals? What would simplify their work and give them more time to focus on their research? We sought views from researchers who have been associated with us and asked them to share their personal experiences with us. This post is the first of a two-part series featuring interviews with a diverse group of researchers across disciplines.

Motoaki Bamba, Japan

Associate Professor, Kyoto University
Research areas: Optical Engineering and Photonics

Collaborations always expanded my research interest, which has also been quite essential for the growth in my career.

What has helped you achieve success and growth in your career?
Connections with a variety of researchers in discussions, collaborations, etc. have been quite important for the growth in my research career. It has been quite fruitful to talk directly with the researchers who wrote articles that I was interested in. Collaborations always expanded my research interest, which has also been quite essential for the growth in my career. Any research articles and applications for grants, positions, etc. are basically reviewed by researchers from similar disciplines. Also in this sense, the connections have been quite essential for my career.

What are aspects of your work that can be simplified, so that you have more time to focus on your research?
I would like to record my comments on research articles and books I reference by using DOI more efficiently. There are already some services and I am using one of them. However, when I read articles, the references therein appear as just text or hyperlinks. I have to put the information of the references by hand for checking my comments on the references. If articles are automatically connected in the service, I can quickly check my comments on the references and have more time to focus on my research.

Shervin Hashemi, Korea

Post-Doctoral Fellow, Institute for Environmental Research (IERY), Yonsei University
Water, Sanitation and Sustainable Solutions

I would like to see a day where no one is left behind in terms of access to clean water and sanitation.

What has helped you achieve success and growth in your career?
First, it is important to understand the definition of success and growth in a career. The definition varies from one person to another. About me, I think I still have a long way ahead to gain an achievement that can be called a true success. I still have a lot of plans for the future.

In my whole life, I always tried to aim high and take action. To do this, having strong motivation is essential. I would like to see a day where no one is left behind in terms of access to clean water and sanitation. I think this is a very high aim at the moment. But it is indeed my motivation that gives me the energy for doing my best to make this a lifelong pursuit.

My work experience has shown that there will be obstacles along the way, but I always try to earnestly work at what I believe in until the day when the world can celebrate achieving the 6th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG6).

What are aspects of your work that can be simplified, so that you have more time to focus on your research?
When research proceeds to a sufficient level that the results are ready to be published, choosing the right journal, formatting the articles, and possible actions to prevent desk rejection are quite challenging and time-consuming. Receiving help in this regard can be very helpful to me. In this regard, I am using the services provided by Editage for about a decade. These services are very helpful for me and I wish to thank everyone who at Editage for all their kind efforts.

Shuji Kitahara, Japan

Associate Professor, Tokyo Women’s Medical University
Life Sciences and Biomedical Engineering

Multidisciplinary knowledge and interactions helped me add to my achievements through collaborative research and co-authorship

What has helped you achieve success and growth in your career?
I guess it’s multidisciplinary knowledge and interactions. As a medical researcher, I was only involved in oncology (pathological research) first, but from the age of about 30, I started interacting with people from different fields, including politics and economics, enrolled in courses other than those on medicine, such as social sciences. And this helped me add to my achievements through collaborative research and co-authorship.

What are aspects of your work that can be simplified, so that you have more time to focus on your research?
One is the submission of papers and the communication with the journal. Also, although online communication has become normal now, I used to need to travel, which wasted my time. Additionally, I wish there was a service that could help me brush up my presentation materials at a reasonable cost.

Researcher success depends on multiple factors, which in turn tend to be interconnected. There is no dearth of individual resources, tools, support systems, and services available to researchers to help them with their myriad tasks. However, these still fall short of the mark in the bigger scheme of things because there is no single “home” for them. Researchers still waste time accessing multiple platforms for different purposes, with no integration or communication between these platforms.

Our interactions with researchers like those featured in this series flagged this as a major gap that’s taking more time away from them. With Researcher.Life, we aim to eliminate this gap by giving them a unified platform they can use for every need at every stage of their careers. Learn more about how we’re doing this by exploring Researcher.Life.

Watch out for the second part of this series to read interesting experiences and views of more researchers!

With the scholarly publishing industry undergoing a rapid transformation over the past couple of decades, the trends in research are constantly evolving. The internet has moved nearly all journal use to the digital space, with most publishers having over 90% of their content available online and many dropping their print versions.1 We’re also seeing a change in how research is being ‘published’ and disseminated. Current trends in research, such as the mounting popularity of preprints and social networks, are enabling academics to get their research to the world much faster, while the vision of open access is quickly becoming a reality.

These recent trends in research mean today’s researchers have access to more research than ever before, which has made discovering the latest, most relevant content in a sea of published research a critical skill for researchers. With these changing trends in research, speed, efficiency, and ease of use have emerged as the need of the hour, giving rise to a host of content discovery platforms, apps and smart tools for researchers. Let’s look at why and how these AI-led solutions are redefining the future of research discovery.

The swelling tide of published research

Research output is increasing, and fast. By 2018, over 3 million articles were being published every year, and this number is growing at an average rate of 4% every year.1 There was an explosion in the volume of scientific data last year, with more than 23,634 articles related to COVID-19 being indexed on major databases in the first six months alone.2 What’s more, if you observe the trends in research output, you will see that this is no longer confined to a few centers of excellence or even specific regions. As the world comes together, international collaboration is emerging as one of the new trends in research, with just over 20% of published articles having co-authors from multiple countries.3

The rise in research output, especially localized research, brings with it a need for improved research discovery as well. While researchers continue to use their institute’s access to search for content, this is no longer enough. Even current trends in research like using digital libraries and specialized search engines like Google Scholar to find relevant content comes with certain limitations; you can only look for what you know exists. So how can researchers make the best use of this growing super-continent of scholarly content? The answer lies in new-age content discovery portals and smart reading apps that are fast becoming the latest trends in research discovery!

The increase in technology-led innovations

There has been a tectonic shift in the kind of technologies available to us today, and it’s developing at an exciting pace. In the publishing arena, with changing trends in research publishing, many journals are already using AI-led tools for content personalization, predictive analytics, and automated reporting.4 On the other hand, more researchers across the world are turning to content discovery portals and reading apps, which run on new-age recommendation engines to keep up with relevant research.

Simplicity and efficiency have emerged as key trends in research discovery. Based on a mix of AI, machine learning and deep learning, recommendation engines are offering researchers a seamless experience, with personalized suggestions on the most relevant content to read. Much like getting direct one-to-one recommendations from an expert or peers who know you well, there is no time wasted searching for research. By making research discovery as easy as reading the news online, these smart solutions are transforming old trends in research reading and fast becoming a welcome addition to a researcher’s toolkit.

Changing digital habits with a focus on convenience

Our world is being reshaped by technology, which not only connects the world but also shrinks it down for us. Research that could once only be accessed in libraries is now available in the palm of your hand, with digital tools continually improving trends in research discovery. Scientists are increasingly turning to content discovery platforms and smart apps to read research, seeing it as an extension of their daily habit of browsing the news or viewing content online. This changing trend in research discovery is proven by a recent study that shows about 70% of healthcare practitioners look for information online, with more than 63% using their tablets or smartphones to access data.5

Moreover, many online products around the world today are integrated. One Google ID, for example, allows you to sign in to and keep track of your preferences and online history, across related products. This has made life simpler and more efficient for all, including researchers, who now want a similar experience in academia. The question being raised now is, ‘Is there a way to integrate my daily research activities through one account?’ Are there any single sign-on platforms that allow you to access products for researchers, or a tool where I can input my preferences once to get personalized research reading? These changing digital habits, focused on convenience, have catalysed new trends in research discovery and consumption. It has also raised some pertinent questions, which are being addressed by smart reading apps, with powerful recommendation engines that deliver the right content at the right time.

Recommendation engines are revolutionizing research discovery

It wasn’t too long ago that researchers had to comb through libraries and flip through several journals to find the information they needed in their field of research. However, smart reading apps have changed these time-consuming trends in research discovery. Based on intuitive recommendation engines, these apps are flipping the literature search process by presenting articles to the researcher.

Today, researchers don’t have to search for scientific data. With smart reading apps like R Discovery, you stay updated on current trends in research through notifications on your device or an email in your inbox telling you that a new item has been added to your curated reading list. And to ensure you maximize every minute spent reading, articles now come with summaries that let you evaluate their relevance before you read the full text. What’s more, you don’t have to start from scratch every time. Once you input your topics of interest, you are ready to receive the most relevant content recommendations, which you can then read anywhere at any time to keep up with the latest trends in research. Using and offering your feedback allows the recommendation system to further fine-tune your requirements, optimizing your research reading experience.

And the information is not limited to specific journals or sources that researchers know about. Content discovery apps and portals scrawl through preprints, conference notes, policy documents and articles from all over the world to bring you relevant information on new developments and changing trends in research. R Concept, a global repository of research and information on COVID-19, is great example of the importance and usefulness of content discovery platforms. Developed as a response to the ongoing global epidemic, R Concept presents researchers across disciplines and geographies with the data they need to understand current trends in research, team up, and find solutions to tackle the COVID-19 crisis.

For more personalized recommendations, researchers are turning to reading apps like R Discovery that ensure you get a dose of relevant content every day. The scholarly publishing world is growing, with an exponential increase in the number of researchers from non-English-speaking countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. However, with English established as the primary language for global academic writing and communication, authors from these countries often find it difficult to understand and navigate the journal submission process when trying to get their work published in top international English-language journals. This is where a manuscript submission readiness check can act as a great tool for researchers to minimize desk rejection and maximize the chance of publishing success.

How manuscript submission readiness checks can work for you

As an ESL (English-as-a-second-language) author, even if you have conducted groundbreaking research and been published in your first language, your work is unlikely to be recognized unless it is published in an international English-language journal. Top journal editors look for a well-written manuscript that follows ethics and publication best practices and suits the journal’s scope, all of which are challenging tasks for ESL authors. In fact, in a global survey, 76% of researchers found the manuscript preparation stage difficult, 60% had problems in selecting the right journal for their work, and 31% said they found it difficult to ensure compliance with ethical guidelines for academic publishing.1

A thorough pre-submission check then becomes an essential step to avoid rejection, which, a study on submissions from 18 countries revealed, can range from 22.6% to 73.4%.2 Evaluating your manuscript’s submission readiness with checks for language quality, references and citations, ethical compliance and declarations, accuracy, and completion allows you to eliminate flaws that could lead to desk rejection. It also helps you assess how well your scientific data is presented through visual elements, while checking for consistency in numbers, data, symbols, measurement units, and text and illustrations used in your manuscript.

Manuscript submission readiness checklist for smart researchers

There are several things to consider before submitting your manuscript, and impressing journal editors and reviewers can be a daunting task, especially for early career and ESL researchers. To make things easier, we’ve broken it all down into a quick list of checks to give you the highest chance of acceptance.3

  1. Manuscript format

Check and follow the key guidelines for the journal you are submitting your manuscript to.

  1. Manuscript structure

Ensure your manuscript is complete from title to structure, acknowledgements to footnotes.

  1. Language and flow

Focus on sentence structure, grammar, comprehension to deliver a well-written manuscript.

  1. Graphics

Present your scientific data effectively in clear, well-structured, detailed tables and figures.

  1. Facts and details

Do a thorough check to ensure accuracy and consistency in numbers, facts, data, and symbols.

  1. Author information

Include all relevant details about authors, their full names, contribution, and contact details.

  1. Attribution and acknowledgement

Be sure to mention all help received, including sources, references, permissions, and consent.

  1. Conflict of interest

Disclose any and all potential conflicts of interest when submitting your manuscript to a journal.

  1. Ethical compliance

Ensure your research study complies with all relevant ethical guidelines in your field of study.

  1. Cover letter

Remember to add a detailed, well-structured cover letter to create a winning submission package.

Identifying and fixing these ‘critical’ errors is crucial to ensure that your work is judged by its scientific merit, instead of avoidable mistakes in writing or submission. If this seems like a lot, or you’re unsure how to get it right, turn to R Pubsure, a full-suite AI-powered manuscript readiness check that can help you with optimizing manuscripts and accelerating the journal submission process.

It’s sometimes hard to articulate exactly what we mean by an ecosystem for academic researchers, and indeed the ecosystem itself is just a means to an end. The ‘end’ is the solving of problems that we have observed as being ubiquitous in academic research. Problems which look unsolvable, until you realize that we stand a chance of making real changes and making academia more human (and humane) if we know first where we are heading. Then we can start to take steps in that direction, and to fix what’s wrong with academia, slowly but surely.

There are many ways we could have communicated the intentions and direction of our efforts, but we decided to do so in the form of a manifesto. The definition of a manifesto makes this the perfect vehicle to declare our plans:

A manifesto is a published declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made [from Wikipedia, 10 Jun 2021].

So, partly inspired by Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science, we introduce our Manifesto. Five points to redesign academia around researchers. Here it is in full:

  1. We give time back to the researcher
Too much time is spent on writing, reformatting, submitting, reviewing, planning lectures, applying for grants. We want to minimize the time required from you for these activities, whilst maximizing your impact.
  2. Putting the researcher at the centre means we optimise systems for the researcher.
This subtle change of focus is crucial. Publishers optimise systems for publishers. Grant-awarding bodies optimise systems for grant awarding bodies. We optimise for you, rebalancing some of these interactions, and placing more control into your hands – making them more human, rewarding, and ethical.
  3. Research is important, but researchers are more so.
The ever-growing demands on researchers mean that mental health, exhaustion, depression and worse, are common amongst academics in the 21st century. We recognize this aspect of research life, and provide practical means of support, mentorship, and advice to look after the most important resource of all – you.
  4. We help you to help the world.
Your research is typically locked up in difficult-to-access academic journals. We provide ways to open up your research to wider audiences with lay summaries and social media collateral. An engaged public could be your next collaborator, as could a stranger in another country.
  5. We take the search out of research.
We know you and your work, your interests and preferences, and will proactively recommend content, conferences, funding, and collaborators as they arise. Life’s too short to keep on top of everything – let us do that for you.

We’re planning on adding a sixth later this year: Changing academia shouldn’t cost the Earth. This would be our commitment to sustainable web design and the overall ‘greening’ of Researcher.Life. We are holding off adding it until we’re sure we can meaningfully deliver on that promise, but it is an intention.

This is our commitment, our vision, and our list of guiding principles. We are with you every step of your researcher life.

So – what do you think? Are we missing anything important here?

Every profession has its own challenges and academia is no exception. Given the intense and time-consuming nature of the work researchers perform, the challenges in academia are unique and have affected researchers globally for a while. Long work hours, the pressure to publish, and job uncertainty can cause depression, anxiety, and burnout in researchers. These emotional and psychosomatic manifestations could also affect their self-confidence, efficiency, and productivity. Researchers often feel isolated and overwhelmed, and thus, there is a pressing need for a platform that enables academics to connect with fellow researchers who may be going through similar struggles, to share experiences with them, and to seek and give advice and support.

R Voice: The concept and its genesis

R Voice is part of the ecosystem of tools for researchers, developed by Cactus Communications; it is a community platform designed to enable researchers to openly share their life journeys and challenges, discuss various ways in which their academic environments affect their lives, seek guidance from fellow researchers, and build their own support system in an otherwise harsh or demanding academic environment. The idea for this platform emerged from Editage Insights, a CACTUS forum hosting educational resources to help researchers in their professional progression. In a section on Editage Insights featuring personal stories, many researchers have shared moving and inspirational accounts of their academic lives. These include experiences that indicate how researchers often feel like they are alone, need a support system, and would actually benefit from being able to connect with fellow researchers who have experienced similar realities. Moreover, the results of a large scale global survey conducted by CACTUS on mental health in academia provided the evidence that supported the need for setting up R Voice as a safe space for researchers to have open conversations around aspects such as academic life and struggles, the academic culture, or mental health in academia.

Evidence from a large-scale survey among researchers

To get a glimpse into the research culture and mental well-being of researchers globally, CACTUS conducted a mental health survey from October 2019 to July 2020. The CACTUS Mental Health Survey is the largest and most diverse survey of its kind, with responses from over 13,000 researchers, across career stages, in 169 countries. The survey uncovered some thought-provoking findings.

Many researchers who took the survey acknowledged the support of peers but felt that the wider organization was less supportive and inspiring. A considerable proportion stated that they had felt overwhelmed by their work situation fairly or very often within the month before taking the survey. The competitive nature of academia was evidenced by responses stating that the pressure to perform and the burden of maintaining and improving one’s standing in the research community were major stressors. The lack of sufficient and high-quality resources was quoted as a hindrance by 44% of the respondents. Importantly, 37% of all respondents reported having experienced discrimination, harassment, and bullying. Many reported perceiving a lack of policies to counter these behaviors and/or unethical research/publication practices, as well as a lack of an adequate work–life balance. About half of the respondents working in a country different from their home country were also highly likely to report feeling overwhelmed. A worrying finding was that across regions and designations, female respondents were more likely to indicate that they felt overwhelmed than male respondents were.

Strikingly, nearly half of the survey respondents stated that they would not discuss work-related feelings of severe stress or anxiety with relevant people in their workplace. The general belief that stress and anxiety are normal in academic life often prevented researchers from seeking professional help when they experienced these feelings.

CACTUS has also published a follow-up report presenting the results of a thematic analysis of respondent comments on how a supportive research environment can be cultivated. An important theme emerging from this analysis was the need to improve workplace communication and collaboration and create a social environment, voiced by 17% of the sampled researchers.

How can R Voice help researchers?

On most online forums and social media platforms, discussions on academic life and culture devolve into intense negativity and personal attacks. Such scenarios invalidate the original intention to engage socially and might push the communicator further into a downward spiral. However, R Voice is highly supportive and positive, discouraging hurtful and disparaging content. It has a nurturing atmosphere and hopes to bring about greater positivity in the research culture worldwide.

Building a nurturing academic culture

Researchers experience multiple stressors in the course of their academic and professional journeys. An environment normalizing high levels of stress can make many scholars feel isolated, emphasizing the importance of a supportive community they can turn to in times of need. In this community for researchers, one can connect with hundreds, if not thousands, of fellow researchers across the globe. This researcher support system will benefit researchers at all career stages, as well as administrators who can make a difference by being cognizant of the challenges researchers typically face in their work environments, which in turn will help bring about a more positive and nurturing research culture.

Research discovery and assimilation is a critical part of the research process, which makes it critical to have effective literature search strategies in place.

It is imperative for scholars to ensure that the information they gather is relevant, recent, and reliable, but this is not always easy. To put things in perspective, recent data shows that between January to May, more than 23,000 Covid-19-related papers were published, with the number expected to double every 20 days, making this one of the biggest explosions of scientific data in history. In such a situation, is there a search strategy for literature review that can help researchers?

While the digital age has made information more accessible, researchers need easy literature search strategies to optimize their reading. Sifting through large amounts of scientific papers to find the most reliable and relevant research can be overwhelming for authors, which in turn impacts overall researcher productivity. In fact, a report by Elsevier and Sense about Science shows that researchers, on average, spend just over 4 hours a week searching for research articles and a little over 5 hours reading them, and while they read 5-6 articles per week, only half of this is considered useful. So, with millions of papers being published every year, and many more being posted as preprints, how do researchers keep up with the growing piles of data? What are the literature search strategies they apply? What is the best scientific literature search strategy for an efficient reading session? Take a look at our top tips that may help you streamline your literature search and a smart AI research discovery tool for researchers to read more, search less and stay updated.

Literature search strategies that will help you optimize your research reading

We’ve curated a quick list of simple steps based on expert advice to help you organize your thoughts and optimize your research discovery.

  • Identify main keywords: One of the top literature search strategies is to segregate your area of research into broad topics, and use these to define relevant keywords, which can be used to fine-tune and focus your search. Also write down synonyms and/or alternative phrases for each keyword, in case you need to broaden your search.
  • Tap multiple channels: It’s not always easy to find reliable data; the Elsevier report reveals that 37% of researchers think only half the research published is trustworthy. One literature search strategy example would be to allay these fears by browsing top academic databases, which store free peer-reviewed articles, or even better, upgrade your scientific literature search strategy with a smart research discovery app that curates content for you from a wide range of journals and multiple databases.
  • Search by citations: Every research paper comes with relevant citations that offer clues to simplify the process. So, when you find a paper that is relevant, note the citations and conduct a backward search. Keeping a track of the resources you find useful, and using that to build your own list of citations is one of the more effective literature search strategies for researchers.
  • Bookmark your searches: When searching for literature, do a quick scan of the webpage as soon as you open it. A tried and tested search strategy for literature review is to bookmark the searches (Ctrl+D) you think may be useful to your study. This will ensure you have the web page and all the information you need at your fingertips when you want to revisit the data later.
  • Use reference managers: Handy tools for researchers, reference managers are used to organize your reads and are often listed as a sound search strategy for literature review. Reference managers allow researchers to directly download and save papers from journals to your desktop, making it easy for you to compile reference lists when writing manuscripts.
  • Subscribe to publisher newsletters: The sheer volume of information available to the public can erode trust in research, according to 28% of the researchers in the Elsevier study. One of the best literature search strategies for authors to allay such worries is creating alerts on top databases or subscribing to newsletters on publisher sites.
  • Recommended – Find one home for all your research: Even with these literature search strategies, finding scholarly articles that are both useful and reliable will need you to scour multiple platforms, which is a time-consuming process. There is always the chance that you may miss out on a crucial piece of information that can aid your research. You may benefit by downloading R Discovery, a free research discovery app for smart researchers, which curates full text articles from top academic databases, and recommends the top reads for you every day based on your preferences, so you’re always updated on research that matters.

The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) late last year led to an unprecedented galvanization of the global scientific community toward quickly learning about the disease, sharing knowledge immediately, and coordinating evidence-based efforts to manage the crisis.

Nearly a year on, hundreds of thousands of articles on various research topics related to COVID-19 have been published, either after peer review or as preprints. In addition, the volume of research literature on COVID-19 continues to grow significantly, which is no ordinary feat considering that SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 were unknown a year ago. However, this staggering growth in COVID-19-related literature, while a great boon for researchers, also poses a unique challenge: that of finding relevant information quickly.

Searching for literature under time pressure

In normal times, researchers in the disciplines of health or life sciences have been reported to spend between 12 and 15 hours per week on scholarly readings, with the average time spent on reading one article being 30 minutes. And this does not even include the time spent on finding what to read.

During a global public health emergency like the one caused by COVID-19, researchers working on this disease are probably accommodating much more searching and reading into their schedules than they did before. The need for smart information-retrieval tools in such situations is, therefore, highly compelling.

Meeting the need for smart discovery of COVID-19 literature

Anticipating these challenges, Cactus Communications launched the R Concept platform, which brings together recent and relevant research on COVID-19. The objective of developing this global repository of information was to ensure that COVID-19 researchers had everything they needed in one place, saving hours of time they would otherwise spend searching through multiple sources of literature related to the topic.

This platform offers researchers a regularly updated repository of literature related to COVID-19 and uses search features powered by state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology. It has a current corpus covering over 600,000 articles, a list of over 300 available COVID-19 data sets, and over 2,800 registered clinical trials related to COVID-19 from around the world, with accompanying details and summaries of the trial objectives and methodology.

Legacy of supporting researchers through challenging times

As a technology company accelerating scientific advancement through effective communication for 18+ years, CACTUS is highly aware of researcher pain points even during normal times. Understandably, the pressure experienced by those at the front lines of COVID-19 research must be tremendous. They are processing a vast amount of information quickly and carefully as they carry out their research responsibilities, while, in some cases, managing risks to their personal well-being. The R Concept platform was one the several initiatives implemented by CACTUS to support researchers through the challenges that emerged because of the pandemic, the others including pro bono translation, editing, and research promotion services for researchers involved in COVID-19–related work.

For its response to the COVID-19 crisis and the support it provided to its customers and community, CACTUS won a bronze award in the category “Most Valuable Corporate Response” at the 17th annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business in October 2020.

We strongly believe in empowering researchers with tools, resources, and services that help them do their work more effectively, especially during tough times like these, and a platform like R Concept can considerably help address some of the top challenges they face as they work toward developing strategies to control the pandemic.

“Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.” – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Hungarian scientist

One of the most common queries I get is, what does a researcher do? To put it simply, researchers identify questions to which answers are needed, find new ways to look at old problems, and communicate their insights to the world. These are critical knowledge-building tasks, and academia is driven by the need for continual innovation and the intense pressure to publish. But rarely does anyone stop to ask – What does a researcher need? It is important to understand what the people behind some of the most important academic breakthroughs today need to succeed and what forms of support are available for them.

The genesis of Researcher.Life

Cactus Communications’ has served as a trusted partner to over 500,000 researchers across the world, having improved the quality of more than 2 million papers over the past 19 years. And this association with researchers has offered us valuable perspectives on their lives, distinct from those of other stakeholders within academia. What’s more, these insights, coupled with our expertise, put us in an ideal position to address the most important researcher needs. So, how did we do this?

We created Researcher.Life, an ecosystem of smart products, novel concepts, and a nurturing global community for researchers that aims to smoothen their publishing journey, accelerate success, and support their well-being. By putting the researcher back at the center of research, Researcher.Life empowers and equips researchers to do more, be more, and succeed more at every stage.

Covering three broad researcher themes to ensure your all-round researcher success

Researchers are known to deal with problems that fit into three broad themes:

(1) a struggle for time

(2) a lack of proper support, training, and mentorship; and

(3) a struggle to understand or meet submission requirements of journals.

1. Researcher.Life gives back time to researchers

Time is of the essence, and researchers know this far too well. On average, they spend 4 hours a week searching for research articles and 5+ hours a week reading them, with only half of this time being of use.1 In an attempt to boost researcher productivity, we developed a personalized research recommender that simplifies content discovery, giving them back time they can then use to do more of what they love

2. Researcher.Life mentors and supports researchers

Most researchers, especially early career researchers, need effective guidance as they navigate the path to success. A recent study showed that 49% of PhD students surveyed spend less than 1 hour a week with supervisors, while 60% sought help online, and even then, they only looked to solve for immediate issues.2 We wanted to help expand researcher knowledge, and so developed a learning platform with the largest suite of researcher-focused online courses designed to address specific areas of focus for each step of the researcher journey!

Research data focusing on the challenges of early career researchers emphasize the lack of a global community of academic storytellers that care about and inspire each other by sharing personal insights. Furthermore, the CACTUS Foundation Global Mental Health Survey, which captured the views of over 13,000 researchers, highlighted the need to address factors affecting researchers’ mental well-being. All of this led us to establish a global community platform to provide researchers across the world with a safe, nurturing environment, where they are encouraged to voice their concerns, share their experiences and create connections that help them grow and thrive.

3. Researcher.Life accelerates research publication

In academia, publications are crucial to advancing careers, building reputations, and creating impact. And so, a top concern for researchers everywhere is the pressure to publish. But with 21% of the manuscripts submitted to major journals being desk-rejected,3 achieving this goal can be difficult. Even ground-breaking research can be rejected because of avoidable language errors, unintentional plagiarism, or non-compliance with basic journal-submission criteria.

We have been intimately familiar with these challenges for nearly two decades. Our premium language and publication-support services reduce the anxiety related to possible rejection because of manuscripts being poorly prepared.

In addition, we combined all our years of expertise with advanced technology to create an AI manuscript optimizer to run instant checks for a manuscript’s submission readiness. This set of tools is specifically designed to help researchers avoid desk rejection and accelerate the publication process.

Another technological researcher-focused initiative we launched was the creation of the world’s largest AI-powered database of COVID-19–related information, including research, news, literature reviews, clinical trial information, and educational resources on COVID-19. This repository helps researchers stay updated on and find answers to some of the most crucial problems plaguing the world today, all within a shorter time period than may have taken otherwise.

Finally, we have also developed a smart journal finder that helps researchers find the right target journal for their manuscript.

The researcher ecosystem addresses typical pain points at different stages in a researcher’s life and career, and when used together, can simplify and accelerate researchers’ journey to success. We’re determined to find new solutions for old problems faced by researchers, and are eager to improve along the way. It’s time for something different.

BMJ Publishing is best known for the British Medical Journal, but alongside this is a flourishing list of over 70 other titles covering a wide range of major medical specialties, such as cardiology, anaesthesia, diabetes, digestion, and ophthalmics. However, even with 50 medical areas to subdivide the vast subject of medicine, researchers and practitioners still face the constant problem of finding the content they are looking for.

Last year, BMJ launched its first use of UNSILO technology to feature the most recent articles in a subject.

BMJ is currently extending these collections to provide an easy way for researchers to identify the content they are looking for. But the challenge of a website is to reconcile a long list of topics with easy navigation. For classification purposes, the more subheads, the better; but for the purpose of retrieving information, when there are fewer headings, it is easier for the researcher to find what they want. It is not easy to scan a list of more than15 items, without some kind of subdivision to break it up. Much of the history of Web design has been about harmonizing these two opposing principles.

It is hence refreshing to see the simple yet effective solution implemented by BMJ for one of its veterinary journals, In Practice. This journal covers most of the veterinary practice, ranging from clinical content on small animals to farm animals, as well as articles on the business angle of running a vet practice. An index of articles by subject area was necessary, and using UNSILO Classify, BMJ was able to build a page of subject collections. However, as the list of collections grew larger, the need for navigational simplicity became more pressing, and recently BMJ introduced a number of subheads with accompanying graphics to further classify the topics. The topics can be found on a dedicated page on the In Practice website (shown above).

Laura Honey (Associate Editor, In Practice) talked about how they were able to achieve this effective layout:

We know, through extensive research with vets working on the ground, that they want easy, quick solutions to access the content they are interested in. Many vets use In Practice articles as guides for their clinical work, so it is important that they have access to this information quickly – which is why we have used UNSILO Classify and created these specific topic collections to improve accessibility on our website.

The topic headings (Companion animals, Farm animals etc.) are used throughout the print copy of the journal, so we wanted to emulate this on our topic collections page. It also makes sense to classify the content in this way as we know this is how the vet profession is structured; for example, if you are a farm animal vet, it is unlikely that you will ever treat cats and dogs, and so you will not be interested in content published in this area. We have recently designed some logos to signpost the different content within the journal, and mirrored this as well for the different collection categories on the website – making this page much more attractive for users!

To come up with the list of categories, we looked back through our archive to see what areas we covered most often. We also asked veterinary contacts on what areas of practice they would like to see captured for each of the different species. This work is ongoing, and we are adding new collections based on the feedback. Our current focus is to build up the collections under our Practice Management topic – this is a vast area of practice covering everything from staff wellbeing and practice finance, to client communication and health and safety.

The response to the new topic collections page has been great. We have seen increased engagement with our articles from users accessing content via this new page, proving it helpful to highlight articles that they otherwise might not have come across.
